It is a forward pass if:

a. the ball initially moves forward (to a point nearer the opponent’s goal line) after leaving the passer’s hand(s); or

b. the ball first touches the ground, a player, an official, or anything else at a point that is nearer the opponent’s goal line than the point at which the ball leaves the passer’s hand(s).

c. When a Team A player is holding the ball to pass it forward, any intentional movement forward of his hand starts a forward pass.

So Snuggles was correct. The poorly written verbiage of the rule relies on the yard markers. Not sure how they'd re-write it, something to the effect of the positioning of the lateraler and laterallee.

yep that's why i posted "by the letter of the law in the NFL Rule book yeah it was a forward pass." Still it's about time we caught a break this year. Been a rough season for catching breaks for the Hawks.

Way too lazy to look it up, but I wonder how rugby (where laterals are part of the play constantly) writes its rule?

i think the rule should stay as it is, its simple and self evident. if we inject more complex rules unnecessarily it hurts the game.
