The thing is.. when people think of wade boggs.. they think mustache.. they think redsox.. he might have been a jerk but he could hit. He was an important figure in boston. retire the number.. there hasnt been an impact player that has had the number since he wore it.
redseat is right in that he should not have demanded it. Plus, he was a Yankee and won a ring as a Yankee, that can’t sit right with BoSox fans at all! Steveringo made another good point in listing all the Sox players who have worn his number since he left Bean Town and joined the Great Pin Striped Empire!
He does not have the best PR people... Until Wade was voted in, HOF members could pick which cap they were enshried with... Boggs annouced we would wear a Devil Rays cap after only two partial seasons in Tampa Bay (his home town)... It was supspected someone paid him for that choice, so MLB insituted the rule that they would decide all future HOF caps...
new to the board, been a Sox fan since 1975 when my first baseball memory happened to be a certain Fisk homerun...and totally disagree with retiring Boggs #, look at the other numbers retired...as far as I know, they didn't have #'s back in Ruth's day and he won 3 WS with the Red Sox before going to the Yankees. I do not remember seeing any acknowledgement of him on the walls, and I would have to say he was as good a player for the Sox as Boggs was. I have to admit I have not been in Fenway since 1997 though so am not sure what has changed in respect to recognition for the past players.
I live in St Louis now and the Cardinals do have a Hornsby tribute on the wall but I believe the Sox criteria is 10 years played with the team along with the HOF.
That cuts Ruth out, so we have Doerr, Cronin, Pesky, Yaz, Ted, Rice, Fisk, and the 42. Nothing for Cy Young as I recall either, Tris Speaker misses the cut on years, as does Jimmie Foxx, then we have Pedro and Roger as well; then you can argue about Rico and Dom and Dewey who are in the Sox Hall of Fame but not Cooperstown.
Just my two cents on it all
Personally while he didn't have the same numbers as Boggs, but since I grew up with him, I would take Dewey over Wade and his ego any day...
