What the hell is it? This may be an aberration, but these are guys who had a lot of "potential" and appear to have tapped it elsewhere:

Justin Smoak: 20 HR 46 RBI .300/.361/.600 2.2 WAR

Logan Morrison: 21 HR 47 RBI .246/.355/.569 2.1 WAR

Eric Thames: 20 HR 38 RBI .260/.393/.596 1.5 WAR

Smoak has tied a career high in home runs already, Logan Morrison is two away from tying his career high, and Eric Thames has shattered his career high.

It's brutal but can't blame the M's for getting rid of Smoak and Morrison. Thames in the other hand was typical Mariners screwing up prospects. He wasn't great or anything but you can't bring guys up to rot them on the bench when he could've just stayed in the minors. He is in the camp of Adam Jones and Choo where they just mismanaged them and gave them zero chance of success.

Smoak and Morrison were never going to do good here. They already got it in their heads that they couldn't hit in Safeco and once they reached that point, that was it for them. As for Thames, well I don't think anyone saw that coming. Good for him.

Thames was only with us for 40 games and stunk so not much to miss there. He has 21 career HR's going into this year and has 20 this year. Who knew?

Funny, at least to me, but Thames now equals Gaviglio. We traded Thames for Ty Kelly who we traded for Gaviglio.

I always thought that Smoak had the tools to succeed in the right situation. Granted I need to see it for more then half a year. However it's not like we didn't give him every possible chance to stick here.

He was an all star last year..

Yeah, but since then he's hitting .192 with 14 home runs (in 119 games) including 116 strike outs. The first half of last season was just a huge aberration to everything else he's ever done in his career. It's exactly why getting excited about what Smoak is doing this first half of the season is a little early, I'll wait and see if he can maintain it.

That said, the one thing Smoak has going for him this year that Saunders didn't last year is that Smoak has cut his strike outs way down. He's striking out only once every 5 ABs, where Saunders was once every 3. I hope Smoak has turned the corner, cause I always liked him, but way too small a sample size, cause there were stretches in Seattle that made me think he was turning it on back then - and then it just went away.

No I agree, I wouldn't be surprised if most of these guys end up regressing back to the mean and look more like Saunders or Adam LaRoche, but I just find it funny that they're having career years after leaving the Ms.

Saw a recent picture of Thames and thought he was roiding. Then saw a picture of him with the Mariners and realized he was just as big back then. Perhaps now he has added some adderall to his supplements and now can finally make contact.

Well, for the first month of the season, at least. Since May 1, .201/.339/.451/.790 9 HR 19 RBI in 42 games, and he's been even worse since June 1.

Ya he has always been big. Some guys just put it together later and I think that is his case. Maybe he found some special herb while in Korea that can't be detected. :)

I'm happy for Logan Morrison, Justin Smoak and especially for Chris Taylor because he never got a fair shot here.

BUT, Brad Miller had a solid year last year and fell flat on his face this year. So I'm going to need to see these guys do it two years in a row before I am sold on them being the improved hitters that they appear to be right now.
