Hey baseball fans, on this day in 1986 a wind gust blows a hole in the roof of the metrodome. After the delay, the Angels rally with a 6 run 9th to beat the twins 7-6

More impressive are his advanced Pitching metrics.

Holy moly, this is the guy they expected to see...especially with their elite defense.

Honestly I had no idea he was doing this well... I so hope he can continue!

There was a period in Detroit where Porcello was one of the better pitchers in baseball. From the all star break to the following all star break his last year in Detroit. I expected him to do decent in Boston with his style of pitching, but not to be an ace like Boston paid him to be.

oh I highly doubt he'll be an "ace" like he is being paid for. Again another overpriced signing the Red Sox did and outbid against themselves.

Here's the thing.

If Porcello repeated his 2014 for Detroit in Boston last year, he would've gotten at least Cueto money. Let's not forget how young this dude is. He would've been in his early 30s by the end of a 6 year deal.

The Homer Bailey contract really blew up the market for SPs. It's also probably the single biggest reason that Jon Lester isn't in Boston anymore as well.

The big issue to me was how could you offer more money to Porcello than you offered Lester. Yes Lester was probably leaving, but the offer Boston made was an insult.

I forgot about the Bailey contract...

No, I think if ownership didn't lowball the snot out of Lester he still would be in Boston.

The Bailey contact screwed up that market.

Matt Garza got 4/50 after the 2013 season, lester's extension basically was 5/82ish IIRC (if you include his 2014 as well).

The Tanaka deal is hard to make comparisons too as well.

But I think they probably could've gotten close to the Bailey deal and gotten it done.

Now trading lackey's almost free year.....that was arguably worse.

Not initially... They low balled the crap out of Lester! but yes Cherington is gone... But I don't think that was his call on Lester either.

Boston's last offer, made this week, was for six years and $135 million, which was an increase from the offer they made to Lester days after he became a free agent and almost double in dollars compared to the four-year, $70 million offer they made in spring training. The Red Sox did not offer a vesting option for a seventh year, as the Cubs did, nor did they offer no-trade language, which also was contained in the Cubs' offer.

The bolded part is what I was referring to when I said they low balled the hell out of him

It's good to see Rick doing well...but he's not a number one and probably not even a number 2. His numbers will even out to his normal numbers.
