Anybody going or following it closely? I've seen a few blurbs here and there. I've watched a few video clips. That's about it.

The Offensive Line

Through two days of fully padded practice, it’s clear to see the progress the offense has made in general but the offensive line, in particular, is looking good.

The move of guard Ron Leary over to the left side with Garett Bolles has paid major dividends for both guys and the addition of Jared Veldheer at right tackle has been excellent in the early goings as well.

Offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave talked after day five of practice about the importance of cohesion up front, and that’s something we’ve been hoping to see all offseason. One of the things we wanted to see going into OTAs even was just the five starting offensive linemen next to each other, even if they weren’t really blocking anybody.

It’s only been five days of practices, but this group is a night and day difference between last year’s crew.

The Broncos are also doing some interesting work cross-training players who are maybe ‘fringe’ roster candidates.

Rookies Sam Jones (sixth-round pick) and Austin Schlottmann (undrafted free agent) are taking reps at both center and guard, and Jones, in particular, had a nice day of practice on Wednesday.

Working in both one-on-one and two-on-two situations against the Broncos’ tough defensive line, Jones held his own and stood his ground, winning three consecutive reps and stone-walling the defensive linemen he faced.

Former big-money free agent pickup Menelik Watson has been working almost exclusively as the backup right guard, while Billy Turner has been the team’s backup at right tackle.

Cyrus Kouandjio has been the primary backup at right tackle and is doing a good job there, too.

Royce Freeman
At day five of training camp, the Broncos seemed to emphasize getting Freeman reps with the top offense.

He did not disappoint.

Freeman made some really nice cuts including a run where he bounced to the outside and blew by the defense for a touchdown.

Even though players are in pads and it’s a ‘full contact’ practice, the hitting is not as intense as it would be in a real game. With that said, Freeman looks like a bulldozer when he gets a full head of steam and it’s clear he’s going to be very hard to take down.

The Broncos are doing a good job of incorporating their variety of running backs into the offense, but Freeman has the look of a player who is going to make a significant impact on the early downs and he will have to earn his role as a third down back.

Luckily, the Broncos have a number of backs who really excel in that third down role, so they won’t always have to have Freeman out there anyway.

Courtland Sutton

Courtland Sutton

Another day at practice, another riveting performance from Courtland Sutton.

If Sutton is ‘unrefined’ as some claimed he was coming out of college, he’s fooling just about everyone in attendance at Broncos camp.

It’s early, so we’re not going to rush to any conclusions, but Sutton looks like one of the best players on the field for the Broncos, period.

I made a point to take note of the fact that almost 100 percent of the time the first-team offense was out on the field, Sutton was out there with them.

The Broncos are very clearly preparing to use Sutton a lot this season, and why not?

He’s taking a lot of pressure off of Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, as are the Broncos’ current group of tight ends (which doesn’t include Jeff Heuerman, who is nursing an injury).

When the Broncos are able to have Thomas, Sanders, Sutton, and tight end Jake Butt on the field all at the same time, they are going to be tough to stop.

Sutton has made a daily habit at camp of skying high over a defensive back for a touchdown catch and hopefully can carry that over into the regular season for the Broncos.

Bradley Roby
The Broncos are anticipating big things this year from Bradley Roby and on day five, he was impressive.

Specifically, Roby was impressive in one-on-one work against Emmanuel Sanders, who he was matched up with the entire one-on-one session.

Roby was in a great position no matter what Sanders tried against him, matching him step for step and forcing quarterback Case Keenum to try and fit the ball in an impossible window.

Among the four reps I watched, Sanders was only able to win one and it was on an absolutely perfect throw in great coverage at the very corner of the front of the end zone.

Sanders was working his way back to the ball, and Keenum put the ball just outside the pylon where Sanders had to make a stellar, toe-drag-swag worthy catch.

Roby wasn’t convinced even as the official raised his hands to signal touchdown that Sanders had made a clean catch.

That kind of competitive fire is exactly what the Broncos need to see from their new number two corner.

Pass Rushers
In case you didn’t already know, the Broncos have an incredible group of pass rushers, inside and out.

While the offense has been generating some headlines — deservedly so — the defense has had its fair share of ‘wins’ and they have made an impact through two padded practices.

Quarterback Case Keenum does a great job of getting the ball out of his hands quickly, but even his quick release is no match at times for the Broncos’ pass rush.

There was a play on Wednesday from Clinton McDonald where the veteran defensive lineman got off the ball so quickly it was almost like he was the center snapping the ball.

McDonald burst through the line for a would-be sack, and since he’s gotten healthy, he’s impressed defensive coordinator Joe Woods.

On another play, defensive lineman Shelby Harris was unable to get past his lineman but he was able to time a jump perfectly and disrupt the throwing lane, breaking up a pass.

The Broncos’ offensive line excelled picking up some of the defensive line’s stunts, but the edge rushers had their share of plays in practice.

There were a number of rushed throws from Keenum as Von Miller and Shane Ray provided pressure off the edge.

Bradley Chubb also had a really nice burst off the edge near the goal line, beating the tackle and getting a would-be sack.

In a two-on-two session between the offensive line and pass rushers, Von Miller and Derek Wolfe went up against Connor McGovern and Jared Veldheer.

Both Miller and Wolfe ran a stunt and easily blew past the Broncos’ starting right guard and tackle. They made it look too easy.

Paxton Lynch
Paxton Lynch’s third NFL training camp had gotten off to a rough start according to onlookers but he showed signs of progression on day four and on day five, he put together a really nice day of practice.

It wasn’t perfect, by any means, but there were a couple of throws Lynch made throughout practice that were absolutely on the money including the play of the day where he threw a pass to wide receiver Tim Patrick deep down the right sideline.

Patrick made an adjustment to tight coverage, and the ball was thrown perfectly in front of him to his outside shoulder and great coverage by the defensive back was still no match for a perfect throw and a great catch.

That was a highlight for Lynch, but he also put together a nice drive in 11-on-11 where he connected with rookie wide receiver DaeSean Hamilton for a big gain, followed by another on-target throw to tight end Matt LaCosse and a touchdown to Austin Traylor.

Another highlight for Lynch, at least from my perspective, was a play in which he didn’t actually complete a pass.

Lynch rolled out to his right on a play and was looking for a receiver running a shallow cross. The receiver was well covered but Lynch didn’t necessarily have space to run with the ball. He directed the receiver to run deep downfield because there was no safety or corner coverage over the top.

The receiver took off running downfield and Lynch put the ball out in front of him, giving him the chance to separate.

The ball fell incomplete, but I couldn’t help but think that was the first time I’d seen Lynch instinctively do something like that as opposed to looking for his first read and then taking off running.

It was a good day for Lynch and all of the quarterbacks had some nice moments in general.
