Torii Hunter was a horrible, horrible defender who gave up as many runs as he drove in with the bat

You might want to re-think this particular line...Hunter's career dWAR was 3.3, while Gwynn's was -8.4 according to baseball reference.

Well, you are in the clear for your Wiggins/butler trade proposal.

Problem is, you've now dug a bigger hole with this one.

LOL Unless Markkanen turns into a future All-Star, the Bulls got hosed in the deal they actually made for Butler.

Since literally everyone else went Gwynn here, I guess that means I'm forced to go Hunter.

The Twins won multiple division titles while Hunter was there, and he's a guy you could do just that with batting him anywhere between third and sixth in the order. In contrast, the Padres had the worst record in the national league during the strike-shortened 1994 season in spite of Gwynn batting .394.

Gwynn was an icon and rightfully so, but Hunter could do more.
Are you being serious here? I have to ask, because this is just ridiculous. This is like asking... who is better, Bruce Bowen or Dr J?

So we are comparing a corner OF to a CF?? offensively, it is not close, Gwynn was much better... Hunter is nowhere near Gwynn...

but Hunter was the better defensive player at a more demanding position... so, that isn't really close either...

BUT since baseball is more offense than defense(except for catcher), you have to go to the better offensive player when it is so significant...

So i got Gwynn...

dWAR is probably the most nebulous of measurement if we want to make this a pissing contest. Neither were good. But Hunter doesn't have the dWAR or BSR to make up for this:

Gwynn career wRC+: 132
Hunter career wRC+: 110

So, um, no, not rethinking this even a little.

Rather famously, Gwynn only struck out three times in a game once -- against Bob Welch and the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1986. But Gwynn played a pivotal role in that game, nonetheless, singling in the eighth, and scoring the tying run in the 10th after reaching on an error. In fact, he added 37.9 percent to the Padres' win probability that day.

Since Gwynn debuted in 1982, only 46 different hitters have posted a season with a batting average above .350. Gwynn has seven of those seasons, the most of any player in that span.

Gwynn faced Greg Maddux 107 times in his career -- more than any other pitcher. He batted .415/.476/.521 against the four-time Cy Young Award winner and Hall of Famer. That's easily the highest average against Maddux for any player with at least 70 plate appearances.

Since World War II, Gwynn is the only player to bat above .350 in five consecutive seasons (from 1993-97). Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby and Al Simmons did so before him.

That's not a good reason because for the most part, the Twins lineup was mediocre at best in the Hunter years so you could bat him in multiple spots in that lineup. On many (if not most) other teams however, he wouldn't have been good enough to be a 2-5 hitter.

I'm going to say this, even though it's so obvious it shouldn't need to be said: how does the TEAM Hunter is playing on mean he is a better player than a guy who hit .394?

Also, career WAR Gwynn 68.8, Hunter 50
