This is so close that I have to give it to sandberg... He had more power, more speed, more 100 run seasons and more 100 RBI seasons...

Wow, another GREAT matchup. Them being almost perfect contemporaries makes it interesting as well.

OPS+ (Sandberg/Whitaker)
120 - 6/9
130 - 6/5
140 - 3/1

Interesting spread. Sandberg had better peaks, but Whitaker had more consistency.

Draw.

Sandberg - 42.6
Whitaker - 33.9

WOW! I was not expecting this after the OPS+ breakdown. CLEAR win for Sandberg.

SBs
CLEAR win for Sandberg. He actually used it as a weapon. Whitaker was not bad, but it not a weapon.

Defense
Sandberg was much more decorated (9 GGs to 2), but my memory (imperfect as it is since I was not a Cubs or Tigers fan) says Whitaker was the better defender.

This matchup actually re-affirms why one is a HOFer while the other has been left out. They are good contemporary competitors, but one was clearly better.

Sandberg takes this down.

Whitaker was a very good defensive 2B. That said, he was often criticized in Detroit for not diving for balls. Yes, this one is close, but even as a Tiger fan, I have to give it to Sandberg.
