Agree. We are in a world where being the first to report something has become more important than reporting it accurately.

1st is one thing, but several outlets are running with it...if it's not true, DAL/Romo will be out with a rebuttal very shortly I think.

The TV job has been reported for weeks so I think they finally got something hammered out and that made it easier for him to say okay.

Not saying this is fake, but again, I maintain a healthy dose of skepticism these days. Unless we are talking friends and family, I don't take anything at face value anymore.

I think you missed the gist of the discussion. No one is saying this specifically is not true. It was a general point on these types of stories.:suds:

Gotcha.

In that case...you guys are right...truth vs 1st...1st will win most of the time in the internet age media.

Eagle fan just said to me on another board that the Texans would have won the SB with Romo. Yeah, that means the Texans would beat the Pats in route to a SB. Gotta love how some people LOVE Romo NOW that he's no longer a Cowboy.

I think the idea of making millions, being home more, and playing golf 5 days a week started sounding pretty good..

Add in a wife that's a solid 9.5...could imagine a worse life

Being able to sleep on a mountain of money sounds pretty fun too, albeit maybe a little uncomfortable.

Romo would have probably taken the Cowboys to the superbowl if not for the atrocious drafting and trading by jerruh for most of his career. Those 2nd round picks on tight ends and the Roy Williams trade could have been used on defensive players. In all fairness to Tony he never had the supporting cast on defence and was unfairly blamed for those playoff losses.

How does this affect the salary cap?

Same as releasing Romo today. $19.6m dead cap hit, but saves about $5m in cap space this year. No dead money next year!

He's being designated as a June 1 cut. Cap hit will be spread out over 2017 & 18.

Link? So he's not retiring today then? This only works if he retires after 6/1. If before 6/1, the cap hit is accelerated to the day Romo retires.

Poor decision IMO. Dallas doesn't need the cap space this year.

Why Tony Romo is right to retire amid Cowboys' game of 'chicken' | SportsDay

...As for the Cowboys, they moved forward last fall when Dak Prescott's improbable winning streak sent Romo permanently to the bench. Designating Romo as a June 1 cut, the Cowboys will be on the hook for $10.7 million in salary cap money this season and $8.9 million in 2018.

I'm getting my order of operations wrong here. Dallas could cut him now and designate a 6/1 cut, but then if they do that, what is to stop Romo from saying "hey, maybe I will go play for Houston?"

Why not just hold the contract and eat the money this year, while they don't have a need for it? I just don't quite understand the rationale here if Romo is actually retiring.

I mean if he is retiring, wouldn't Dallas want him to do it officially as a Cowboy, and not a free agent?

I'm sure people far more knowledgeable than I can speak to the Salary Cap implications around retirements. But you almost think Tony and Jerry have some form of an "understanding" around all this.

For cap purposes a retirement is treated the same as a release - and then it depends on the date of the calendar. After 6/1 and the cap hit is split.

I'm sure Jerry and Romo have an understanding. And I refuse to believe Jerry was holding Romo hostage against his will. But cutting Romo, only for him to retire just doesn't make any sense to me.
