The Red Sox are expected to announce Thursday that Hall of Fame manager and former Diamondbacks executive Tony La Russa has joined the organization.

His exact role is unclear, but a source told the Herald that La Russa’s next stop will be in Boston following four years in Arizona’s front office, a stint as special assistant to the league’s commissioner, and 33 years as a manager in Chicago, Oakland and St. Louis.

La Russa, who turned 73 last month, stepped down from his role as Diamondbacks chief baseball analyst two weeks ago. He spent the previous two years as the team’s chief baseball officer.

“I’m not gonna sit home,” La Russa told the Arizona Republic when he stepped down. “I’m gonna do something. I’ve had a few calls already that people are interested. So, we’ll see what’s out there.”

The Red Sox would not confirm or deny that La Russa is joining the organization, but a team source did say he will not be new manager Alex Cora’s bench coach. It is expected to take a non-uniform role in the front office. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said MLB rules don't allow teams to comment on moves until after the World Series.

His nine years on the Chicago bench matched up almost perfectly with Dombrowski’s stint in the White Sox front office.

My guess is their logic is simply that they have a rookie manager, and a veteran manager could help him behind the scenes.

This would give Red Sox haters all the more reason to hate them. I know that I hate La Russa more than any other manager in the last 40 years. Can't stand the guy and even if behind the scenes, it would make me hate the Sox more.

Hopefully this means Dave Duncan will be in tow.

This is the kind of stuff I expect from Dombrowski. As a fan of a divisional rival, I was sad to see him leave Detroit, but if he had to go, I'd just assume it be to Boston.

@DirtDirtDirt is on to something.

Yeah I don't get this move at all
TLR may have been a (very) successful manager, but that was forever ago and his type of thinking contradicts most of what the Sox have gone with over the last 15 years or so. Really hope they're not drifting further away. Not to mention TLR was not a good president in Arizona.

Dombrowski's thinking contradicts most of what the Sox have gone with over the last 15 years. That's why I like him there.

Did you see the state he left the Tigers in?

Yeah but like you said that was like 50 years ago. I don't get this move at all, really don't

Tony just wants the experience of falling asleep at intersections paved by the founding fathers
