There’s still no guarantee Ereck Flowers is going to remain with the Giants.
But he’s at least working out with them.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the former first-round pick returned to workouts with the Giants today.
Flowers was reportedly upset (and Pat Shurmur wishes players would stop talking about it) by the team acquiring left tackle Nate Solderin free agency), which required him to move to the right side and compete for a starting job. He registered that displeasure by staying away from voluntary workouts.
The Giants offered him up in trade during the draft but found no takers for a mid-round pick (for the guy once picked ninth overall). So now the challenge is to get him back aboard and ready to work.
They didn’t pick up his fifth-year option, so he’s in a contract year, creating incentive for him. The Giants also have a vested interest in him returning, since there’s not another obvious starting right tackle option on the roster at the moment.
After taking a first look at some players during a minicamp, the Giants have decided they’ve seen enough of at least one of them.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Giants are waiving cornerback C.J. Goodwin.
He was just claimed off waivers a week ago after he was cut by the Cardinals. He spent time with the Falcons and Steelers as well.
A former college wide receiver at California (Pa.), Goodwin has played in 28 games the last two seasons.
The Giants signed cornerback Chris Lewis-Harris after the minicamp tryout.
The Giants will close out their offseason program with a three-day mandatory minicamp next week and head coach Pat Shurmur confirmed on Monday that wide receiver Odell Beckham is expected to be in attendance despite not being at recent voluntary OTAs.
What Beckham will be doing at next week’s practices remains to be seen, however. Shurmur said on Monday, via multiple reporters, that it is possible that Beckham will receive medical clearance for team work by that point. Beckham has been limited to individual drills when he has been at practices this offseason as he works his way back from last year’s fractured ankle.
Beckham’s status with the Giants has been a talking point for much of the offseason and things kicked up a notch in March when Giants co-owner John Mara suggested a trade is a possibility. That’s since been walked back and Beckham’s presence at voluntary work has been seen as a sign of calmer waters, although he still doesn’t have the contract extension he’d like to sign before playing out the final year of his rookie deal.
Shurmur also said that defensive tackle Damon Harrison is expected at minicamp after opting not to attend practices the last two months.
