I expect Nick Markakis to be traded before the season starts, either that or we trade Mallex Smith. Kemp is staying, and so is Inciarte, so we don't have room for both of them.

Only real news so far is that we've signed Jim Johnson to a 2 year extension

So, we've signed R.A. Dickey and Bartolo Colon. These are great signings, in my opinion. First, they'll help the young guys develop and learn. Second, they'll be good trade assets.

They're good stop gap guys, but at their age, they won't have much value. This is likely the last go around for both players.

Maybe a postseason contender next year in need of a pitcher will want them.

We signed Jordan Walden to a minor league contract.

He was in our bullpen for a couple of years, and we sent him to St Louis along with Jason Heyward in the Shelby Miller trade. He was the dude that was actually not touching the ground when he released the ball in one of the strangest deliveries I've ever seen.

Jim Johnson's career has been resurrected with us, maybe an Atlanta return will get Walden back on track.

Either way, they still need guys to reliably pitch some innings. There's a lot of risk (IMO) going into a season with a rotation consisting of unproven starters. Don't want to be overworking your bullpen in the spring.

We're in serious pursuit of Jason Castro. Honestly, I'd rather stick with Tyler Flowers unless Castro will be the backup

really not sure who would be the better of the two. Castro's offense has stagnated after a very good 2013 campaign (130 OPS+ in 2013; 84 OPS+ since). Flowers is coming off a pretty strong half season at the plate (109 OPS+), though you wonder how much of it is real (career 88 OPS+). He was a good hitter in the minors, but that was years ago and he'll be 31 in January with over 1700 MLB plate appearances.

They both rate as two of the top 5 pitch framers in 2016 per StatCorner.

I think Flowers has more upside at this point, but it's not a bad catching duo at all IMO.

Steamer projections aren't bullish on him, but they don't account for any underlying improvements either. He might not put up a 129 wRC+ again, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if he exceeds his Steamer projection (.233/.296/.402, 84 wRC+). He did post a career best walk rate (9.6%; career 6.9%) and his hard hit percentage was a career high 43.1% (career 30.5%).

Why The Braves Needed to Sign Sean Rodriguez | FanGraphs Baseball

We'll see if he can come close to repeating that success. Rodriguez did hit very well throughout the minors, granted he isn't very young anymore. He seems like a pretty decent candidate to be a late bloomer.

It's a good depth move, and he can play pretty much every position. The move doesn't have me jumping for joy though. Hopefully he's closer to the 2016 Sean Rodriguez at the plate than the one we've seen for pretty much the rest of his career.

We traded Rob Whalen for Alex Jackson, a 2014 high draft pick of the Mariners. Jackson has been disappointing in his development so far, but he's still only 20, and if he does ever figure it out, we got a steal, and if not, I doubt Whalen ever would have been a big factor other than a few spot starts for the big league club.

We acquired Jaime Garcia from the Cardinals for Chris Ellis, John Gant and Luke Dykstra.

Not a big fan of the move, Garcia is injury prone, and Ellis and Gant had potential to be nice pieces for the big league club down the road.

We traded Tyrell Jenkins and another prospect to the Yankees for Luke Jackson.

Not a fan of the trade, Jackson is older than Jenkins, has struggled in his time in the Majors, and I thought Jenkins showed some promise last season.

And we released Williams Perez. I'm completely fine with that. Dude sucked unless he was facing The Phillies.

Any Braves fans that bought a Dansby Swanson jersey for themselves or as a Christmas present for a child should know that it was announced yesterday that he will no longer be sporting a number 2 on his jersey, he will be switching to number 7 now that Gordon Beckham isn't on the team anymore.

I better order another quickly.
