The Redskins Disregard for the Draft by the Numbers

7 1st round pick in 10 yrs 2 in one year 2005
7 2nd round picks 3 in one year 2008
8 3rd rounders none from 05-08
8 4thr round picks none 06-07

a mere 30 picks in rounds 1-4 in 10 years , dallas had 41

36 of 76 total picks were in the 6th and 7th rounds 47.6 % 20 7th rounders or 26%

no wonder we suck ? hard to blame scouts with that crap

It was clearly the results of an impatient organization and Snyder, Vinny, Mr. Gibbs and to a lesser extent Shanny all had the same "win now" short sighted mentality and it absolutely killed us. A 2nd for a washed up Jason Taylor after an injury was pure panic, nothing less.

It goes well beyond those numbers. The actual picks made have in general not been that good. It is a combination of a bad FO & bad scouting dept. That is why I & others have so much hope at this time. I am pretty sure that the numbers are the exact opposite for organizations where SM had a significant role.

All of the teams that he was associated with - 49ers, Seahawks & Packers all were pretty much built through the draft. Should be good times ahead.

You could write a book on this subject. There have been other equally questionable moves. They gave up a # 1 for L. Coles, threw in a #2 as part of the Bailey-Portis trade & off course sent a slew of picks for RG3. I somehow don't think you are going to see this issue surface over the next several years. Good times.

The problem is, this team for the last 15 years or so has always taken a one extreme or the other approach to free agency and the draft.

They either spend to the roof on other peoples stars, or go dumpster diving and wonder why things fell apart. Hopefully the new GM brings some balance AND that the draft doesnt become about selling Jerseys as it usually has when ever we do actually pick in the first round. So far free agency has actually been a nice surprise, we are heading into the draft.

Should be interesting.

It pisses me off that the team's reputation is to overspend in free agency with the big spash signing. That hasn't been the case for a long time. The last big time big name FA signing was Fat Albert and that was years ago

Now pissing away draft picks? That's another story.

Interesting that you don't consider DJax a big time, big name FA signee.

Not at all. They didn't sit around a table and make a plan to go after DJax in February as they did with so many other failures. He kind of fell into their laps late in the FA period and they got him for under market value because he wanted to stay in the NFC East and the Giants and Boys were set at WR and not really interested. And of course to date he has not been a failure which also is their reputation.

He signed for 3 for $24 mil or $8 a season with $16 mil guaranteed. By comparison Eric Decker signed for 5 for 36.25 or 7.25 mil per year with $15 mil guaranteed. Nobody considers Decker to be in Djax's league.

Most of those years when they went dumpster diving were the result of previous poor decisions that left the team in a bad situation cap wise. They also didn't use most of whatever draft picks remained very wisely. You will notice that teams like the Packers rely almost exclusively on the draft & only sign the occasional free agent to put them over the top.

I feel totally confident that the SM will address these issues & thus far they are doing exactly as should be expected. Honestly - if this regime doesn't work out relatively well over time then I think that they may be doomed for a very, very long time. One issue with all of this is that fans need to be patient & stop expecting everything to be built overnight (which is tough given the crap all of us have been delivered in the past). Should be good times.

If we lose all of our preseason games will Jay Gruden be fired if we lose all of our preseason games?
