New York Mets left-hander Jason Vargas has a broken bone in his non-pitching hand and will visit a specialist later Sunday, the team announced.

Vargas suffered a non-displaced fracture of the hamate bone in his right hand Saturday when he attempted to catch a line drive in a minor league game.

Initial X-rays showed no broken bones, but a CT scan performed later Saturday revealed the fracture.

The Mets did not announce a timeline Sunday for how long Vargas would be sidelined. Mets manager Mickey Callaway indicated Saturday, however, that the team did not think Vargas would miss the start of the regular season, even if he doesn't pitch again this spring.

Vargas, 35, signed a two-year, $16 million deal with the Mets last month after going 18-11 for the Kansas City Royals last season.

Vargas to have surgery on non-pitching hand

Mets left-hander Jason Vargas will have surgery on his non-pitching hand and is unsure whether he will return to New York's starting rotation for the beginning of the regular season.

Vargas, who has been diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture of the hamate bone in his right hand, will undergo the operation Tuesday.

The Mets announced Monday that Vargas would return to his throwing program approximately five days after the surgery, which would give him just over a week to be ready for his scheduled turn in New York's regular-season starting rotation.

But after throwing a modified bullpen session Monday, Vargas acknowledged that he could potentially miss a start or two in April, saying his right hand needs to heal to the point where he can catch the ball and grip a bat.

"It's all going to depend on how things go post-op," Vargas told reporters, according to the New York Daily News. "But the word is that I should be able to get back to throwing in about five days after surgery -- that's definitely a positive that I won't have to be shut down and rebuild the throwing program."

Vargas suffered the injury Saturday when he attempted to catch a line drive in a minor league game.

The Mets open the regular season on March 29 at home against the Cardinals. Noah Syndergaard is slated to start the opener, and Jacob deGrom is scheduled to start the Mets' second game on March 31. Mets manager Mickey Callaway has not named a rotation beyond those first two starts.

Thor....

Noah Syndergaard's velocity tops MLB starters

Noah Syndergaard has had an impressive spring. He hit 101 mph in his debut against the Astros. He struck out seven consecutive Nationals a few outings later. He was named the Mets' Opening Day starter.

But that's just Spring Training. Come the regular season, baseball fans might be watching Syndergaard do unprecedented things for a starting pitcher.

Syndergaard stands alone among starters in terms of sheer velocity. The headline-grabbers are his monster fastballs, a four-seamer and sinker, but his power stuff extends across his arsenal, to his changeup and slider, too. Syndergaard enters 2018 with the hardest velocity among MLB starting pitchers in all four of those pitch types.

He's a freak, and he can make even the best hitters in the world can look overmatched. Take his showdown with reigning American League Most Valuable Player Award winner Jose Altuve in his first Spring Training start. After pumping in multiple 100-plus-mph fastballs, Syndergaard struck out Altuve on a 92-mph changeup. After the game, Altuve could only say, "If he throws that changeup to me 100 times, he's going to strike me out 100 times."

Bump.

I have a bit more faith in the youth moving forward. Nimmo and Confoto finished really strong, Rosario started rough but seemed to progress. McNeil I liked a lot.

The pitching is there, just need to stay healthy.

We need a catcher. If he can't hit at least get someone that can match this pitching staff.

Center field needs to be addressed, can't have a pitching based team and no centerfielder.

The bullpen obviously is still a problem, needs a complete overhaul.

i keep meaning to check one out. lots of development happening in harrison from my train view as i commute on by. went to saints/giants yesterday myself.

Yep, Harrison and Newark (around Penn station at least) are being revamped. All those abandoned warehouses/factories are being leveled and turned into condos. Happened in Hoboken 25 years ago, Jersey City 10 years ago and now Harrison/Newark.
