Vancouver is no longer part of the unified bis to host the 2026 World Cup...

Sportsnet 650 commentator Perry Solkowski reports that the United 2026 committee has informed Vancouver they are no longer a part of the bidding process after the city failed to meet the deadline.

Chicago out, too.

seems FIFA had wording in the contract that said they could change things about the bid with impunity.
so the cities are agreeing to whatever costs that FIFA seems fit, or may see fit in the future.

I see absolutely no point in Canada or Mexico being involved in this. Vancouver was pretty much the only half-decent stadium in the country where soccer could be played before a huge crowd. Skydome might not even be able to be converted for soccer without some crazy sightline angles by 2026 (if they ever actually get around to fucking renovating that eyesore). Won't even start on Montreal.

I'm perfectly fine flying to NYC or Boston or Philly or wherever to watch a few games. I don't see the need for Canada to feed into the FIFA coffers so we can host Costa Rica vs. Iraq.

you would think the infrastructure costs for Vancouver would be minimal as the stadium was already reno'd and held a fifa tournament ... they just needed the natural grass and they mentioned in the cesspool that cost would be minimal for 5 games max ... security would be costly but it wouldnt be of winter olympic sized proportion

The bid costs werent being shared/split across the board by each city, were they?

I also read that they basically want exclusive access to BC Place for two months (i.e. no other events can be held).

Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium, Toronto’s BMO Field and Montreal’s Olympic Stadium remain candidate venues.

None of these stadiums, each for very different reasons, should be hosting World Cup games. I'd be embarrassed to put any of those on international television screens.

Hearing that Minnesota (Minneapolis/St. Paul) has joined Vancouver and Chicago in pulling out of the unified bid to host the 2026 World Cup.
