Anytime you have Mountaineers going against Mountaineers, one would expect a battle, a tight closely fought contest. Most believed this WV team would be tested early against a more experienced St. Mary's squad and that WV would struggle to win. That assessment was clearly wrong. This is a new team, a new attitude, and a new approach after a dismal 2012-13 season. Though it may not be written in the media, Huggins does not like losing and last year has left a scar on a Hall of Fame Coach who now has a lot to prove to the college basketball world. This team could very well do just that.
Tonight WV got off to a good start and never let up on their way to beating the "other" Mountaineers from St. Mary's 77-62. The WV Mountaineers (1-0) shot 56 percent from the floor (28 of 50) and 83.3 percent from the free throw line (15 of 18) in an efficient all-around offensive performance. Juwan Statan scored a career-high 22 points and Eron Harris added 19 as Nathan Adrian chipped in 11 points along with Brandon Watkins adding 10 points. St. Mary's led the battle of the glass with a 30-28 advantage but when you shoot well sometimes that will happen. Only 8 turnovers for WV on this evening.
Overall, a good solid win here tonight for the WV Mountaineers and this will surely be seen as a building block going forward. To me, this looks like a team that can and will improve as the season progresses. The pain of last season is still fresh in the minds of Coach's, players, and fans so this poster believes the effort will be more noticeable and so will the results. Next up is VA Tech for the Mountaineers of WV. Have a great day Mountaineer fans and bloggers wherever your country road has taken you.
