Those ain't wings on their helmets, tho ... they're fancy colored jock straps. There were several teams that had winged helmets before Michigan including Ohio State, Purdue, Michigan State, and Princeton. Michigan hired former Princeton head coach Herbert “Fritz” Crisler to be their head coach, he made the move to the winged helmet. The first game that they played with the winged helmet was against Michigan State who was also wearing the winged helmet. Michigan dominated the game.
This is about underrated programs, not under performing.Ucla? Texas A&M? List is crap

Dude, you are going to hell for this one.The Spartans have traditionally been overlooked/underrated.....they need better marketing.....perhaps a new fight song:
Too Soon?
Meh, minor league theft. Those guys north of the Red River steal LAND. Not some Mickey Mouse helmet decal, but LAND!Here's a little college football trivia for you. Michigan stole the winged helmet concept from Michigan St. who stole it from Brown University.
To be underrated you have to do something rather spectacular in order earn that title. TCU maybe, WV and KState would be best described as upset specialist because they don't actually win anything.WVU, TCU,KState all belong But there IS something to be said for a program like Pitt.
No stadium, no fans, conference sucks, and nobody alive remembers their last NC and yet.... I hear tales that the school STILL sponsors a team that plays in the Steelers parking lot from time to time.
Kudos to Pitt for honoring nostalgia.
Ya'll are crewed this year.I think Alabama should be at the top of the list.
I mean, 5 of the last 9 championships and they still make us play these games to qualify for the playoffs. It should be like Olympic hockey back in the 20's. Canada was automatically in the gold medal game and everyone else played in a tournament to get to the gold medal game.
Crewed? So he was also watching Washington row against Oxford?Ya'll are crewed this year.
- QB controversy
- New coordinators
- Saban has been focused all off season on the Croatian World Cup run
You guys crash and burn among the distractions.
if we're talking about how highly rated each team is right now, compared to where they should be given their history, I'd say that the Golden Gophers of Minnesota ought to be near the top. 7 national championships, and they're an afterthought in the big ten the vast majority of the time.
That was a big time matchup. Two of the best crews in the world going head to head.Crewed? So he was also watching Washington row against Oxford?

Auburn and Washington play each other on opening day so I'm going with those two for sure. It's an interesting list, but rather flawed.
First off, Michigan St. is 27th, not 21st, in winning percentage; and up until a few years before they joined the Big 10, they were not even considered a major college.
Second, Pittsburgh's winning percentage ranks 45th, not 38th, so they should be nothing more than an afterthought for these rankings.
And, just for the record: LSU is 14th, not 13th; Washington is 21st, not 17th; and Auburn is 19th instead of 15th.
Auburn still gets a good bit of respect in the polls, so I wouldn't consider them under-rated. I'd say the same pretty much holds true for Michigan St. And, up until a couple of years ago, so did LSU; but their current lack of respect is due to recent performance.
Washington probably does not get quite as much acclaim as they are due, but they still get some love. The Huskies may be the only team on this list can can really be called under-rated.

And everyone gives all the respect in the world to those programs. Hell every single year for the past 20 years is the year that Tennessee is going to come back and take over the SEC East. How they hell are they under rated? And for the record, Florida St., Tennessee & Georgia are the 11th, 12th & 13th ranked teams by winning percentage, which is higher than any of the teams mentioned in the article.
