For all the attention Stanton's getting, J.D. Martinez is putting up some absurd power numbers himself. He's only played 108 games, but he's hit 40 home runs and his .382 ISO is considerably higher than Stanton's (.351). Martinez is hitting .297/.374/.679 (163 wRC+) this year. His SLG% alone is over 1.000 this month.

I stand in agreement with this. There are a lot of ways to approach the history of baseball and one of the wrong ways it to pretend it didn't happen. He can tell himself he broke "the" record but he won't be on the list until he actually does. That has nothing to do with respect (or lack) for McGwire, Sosa or Bonds.
