The last few days Henry Melton has been taking some reps at defensive tackle in a stand up position. Mel Tucker wants to see how it looks and how it plays out to determine how they will use this alignment. I cant say I have really ever heard of this style/technique before but I am sure it has been done. What do you guys think of a stand up DT and who on your team would play that role if your organization chose to use one?

Jason Hatcher for the Cowboys. This guy is going to have a breakout year for the Cowboys this year

Nebraska has a stand up package called "Steeler." Took MSU to the shed with it, so I'd say it works. Patriots have a similar one called "Prowl."

@2:35 and several other times.

My main thing with a DT is whether he can 'jack up' the OL and lean over to close his gap. The situation described here is situtational, lol.

I would think quick DT's that stood up and created some space in obvious passing situations would make it tough on a phonebook guard or center

The Seahawks did this a fair a mount last year on passing downs with Jason Jones and Greg Scruggs, usually while bringing just three rushers. I imagine that they will use Jordan Hill and Michael Bennett this year in this role.

It's a wrinkle. It's not really a significant portion of a defense.

I think most defenses these days have this kind of package in their playbook. With the NFL being a passing league like it is every defense has to try and confuse the OL and quarterback of where the pressure is coming from so having 6-7 guys all at the line standing can definitely lead to some of that confusion. Although if a offense spreads the defense out it can just about completely illuminate some of the guessing game in this as defensive players will be out of position trying to get back to the guy they are supposed to be covering.

For the Broncos they would probably use from the DT position Sly Williams, Derek Wolfe, or Malik Jackson in this type of role as all 3 have the ability to play multiple positions and have the speed to actually be successful in this kind of formation.
