It amazes me how Alabama is still number 1 when Clemson has played and beaten #13 and #14 in the country while Alabama has only played #3 FSU who are not ranked right now at 0-2.

Alabama is #1 based on expectations - which have not changed a lot since the pre-season. And the fact that they have dominated every team they have played this year.

Clemson is #2 - partially based on expectations, partially because they look more dominant than the teams ranked below them in the Top Ten - and partially because Gus Malzahn has become the new Les Miles.
