Jack Taylor of Grinnell drops 138 points for collegiate scoring record - ESPN

To say Jack Taylor had the hot hand Tuesday night would be an understatement.

The Grinnell sophomore guard dropped 138 points during a rout of Faith Baptist Bible, easily rewriting the collegiate scoring mark previously held by Bevo Francis of Rio Grande. Grinnell, a Division III school in Iowa, won 179-104.

Taylor was 52-of-108 from the floor and drained 27-of-71 3-pointers. He added seven free throws on 10 attempts in 36 minutes.

He has 185 points through Grinnell's first three games.

Francis held the NCAA scoring record with 113 points against Hillsdale in 1954. In 1953, Francis had 116 against Ashland Junior College. Frank Selvy is the only other player to reach triple figures, scoring 100 points for Division I Furman against Newberry in 1954.

The previous Grinnell record was 89 by Griffin Lentsch last Nov. 19 against Principia.

And he still shot below 50% from the field :L
How the hell did he get 108 shots off? Let alone 52?

Amazing! But Ok we will think about it this way. We will take Kobe's 81 and take his percentages from threes and twos and compare hiw many he would of had w/ greater competition and actuallt being guarded. He shot 61% from two pointers so he would of made 65 out of 108 and he shot 53% from three-pointers so 38 for 71. He would of had 114 points off three pointers and 54 points off two pointers and add free throws percentage to same as this kid...Kobe shot 90% from FTS so thats another 10 points.

So Kobe would of had 178 points the way he shot when he had 81. 40 more points.
If a player takes that many shots a they are a pretty good shooter, you going to score at least over 120, but to do it shooting a good percentage is the key!

so in his 36 minutes of playing, he scored 3.8 points per minute and took 3 shots per minute. How did the rest of the team even have a chance to take any shots? I guess the other 41 points came in the 4 minutes this kid didnt play??

Not to rain on his parade, but there was a guy on the other team in this game that scored 70 (34 for 44). That's the guy that should get props, because he might have actually passed the ball a time or two.

It's a gimmick offense. The Reason the other player had 70 on 34-44) Is because, Grinnell runs the press the entire game and if the other team gets to half court they basically give them a lay up. It's a system designed to create more possessions and general chaos. The thinking being if you run the system you can adapt to the chaos more quickly than the team that doesn't. Grinnell will often let a certain player take most of it's shots when they play a weaker opponent thus getting a big head line game. And in turn the coach of this gimmick offense can sell more books and tapes (which he does) on how effective the offense is.
