I know he got hurt last year but in a limited roll he averaged 4.1 yards per carry on 77 attempts. He also had a touchdown on a return. If you look at the combine numbers and compare them against Cook & McCaffrey he edges both these guys out in almost every category. Cooks does hit 22 on the benchpress to his 14 but that is still better than McCaffrey's 10. :D

He will be in his second year in the system. His online will be better and with Jeffrey and Smith on the outside other teams will have to respect our passing game. I know he had the one fumble but I am just curious why we are so ready to give up on him and possibly use a 1st round pick on a RB with similar body types and running styles.

We have Sproles who he is learning from and don't we also have Terrell Watson who is like 6'1", 240lbs, and ran like a 4.55 40. Unless I am missing something I see CB, DL, LB, & OL depth being more of a priority in this years draft.

He might be solid, but he's hardly a weapon nor someone that changes defenses and he's not a fulltime back either.

Also I did what you said and looked at the numbers, but they don't support your statement.

McCaffrey jumped higher, jumper longer, ran the cone quicker, ran the short shuttle faster and the long shuttle faster. Wendell takes only 2 out of 7 events and that includes only .01 difference in the 40.

And since this will become a comparison thread between what we have and what we could potentially have I'll add a very important difference between Smallwood and McCaffrey and that's the offenses they came from in college. McCaffrey did literally everything that pros ask you to do on a football field from the position. All types of runs, from all types of formations. He was very successfully used in any and all situations.

I like Smallwood...but not as a feature. I think if it can be done they would like to get out from under Sproles at this time. Watson only looked great in a small sample size.

To your point.....we could be OK with what we have and figure it out. Still.....if someone like Cook is at 14 and BPA at other position areas are not of great value I would welcome this addition.

Or....they take one later. I just dont see them passing up such a deep RB draft for a chance to have a true feature back.

Ok, McCaffrey wins. :) All the same, the numbers are all very similar. I just can't see wasting high pick on a guy we may already have. I don't follow college at all but are both these guys that much better than Smallwood?

Yeah, Smallwood probably wouldn't go until later than the 3rd round in this draft. I doubt any team would give us a 3rd for him right now.

I'm on record as not a fan of McCaffrey in the first. But I think Cook has a pedigree to be worth it. That doesn't mean I don't want to fold a McCaffrey skill set in with the guys we already have.

You make a solid point that I am sure is a discussion in the draft room. I fully expect we go other position at 14 and look for some rb talent to fold in in the 3rd/4th.

He looked very pedestrian to me. Nothing special about Wendell Smallwood. He will never be more than a role player IMO.

It's a bit early. But that was my initial impression as well. I'm actually surprised his workouts are as close to McCaffrey as they are.

Kipps latest mock has McCaffrey going to WAS. Why does it seem he is always going to a NFC East team? Or NE.

Smallwood is a backup/change of pace runner, best as part of a committee. I think he'll be a solid pro but not a lead guy for an offense.
