Kei!

What an abomination.

No matter how bad he got shelled, he still had that stupid grin. I guess knowing you have $20M guaranteed will do that.

Someone should have slapped that smile off of Cash's face before the ink dried on the contract.....

But, Ronald Acuna>>>>

The fact that some publications list Ohtani as the top prospect is laughable at best.

If we're going to start cherry picking prospects, then let's bring up Acuna's 43/144 BB/K ratio from last year.

Still had an OBP of .374. .324 average, with the numbers increasing with each promoted level, 181 hits, 21 homers and 44 stolen bases to top it off. And that was his age 19 season.

A hit is better than a walk every single time.

Ohtani was effective in japan where the average ballplayer was the size of a 15yo girl.

he is in the show now and clearly overmatched ( both hitting and pitching )

I just do not see how he turns things around. i do not see real talent when watching him bat for sure.

Pitching?? maybe he can make some adjustments and be an average MLB arm. But I see nothing exceptional from him anytime soon, if ever

My point is, if we're going to criticize a prospect then why not bring up Acuna's strikeouts? A hit might be better than a walk, but there's also the matter of his minor league contact skills and BABIP translating to the majors especially when there's some swing-and-miss in his game. Heyward had strong batting averages and BABIPs throughout his minor league career and he has a lifetime BA of .262 in the majors with a career BABIP of .300. Heyward also had better minor league strikeout rates than Acuna. That being said, Heyward's turned out just fine (30.2 WAR though most of that comes from defense).

I do think Acuna's the better prospect given their ages though, but they're both unproven. Ohtani dominated a league that's considered tougher than AAA (though not quite on par with MLB) and shows the potential of being able to hit *and* pitch, I can understand why some might consider him to be the #1 prospect.

And something tells me if he was a Mariner, you'd be dismissing it as it "just being Spring Training"

Japanese starting pitchers usually don't work out in the bigs. Darvish and Tanaka seem to be the exceptions.

And for hitters, Ichiro and Hideki Matsui are the only two that come to mind that had real significant impacts.

Nomo worked out pretty well. He wasn't quite able to build on his 95-96 success, but he still pitched nearly 2000 innings and had 21.9 WAR. That's a good career. But yeah, the list of successful Japanese/NPB players is pretty short.

This is a pretty good article on the NPB vs the majors/minors.

How Good Is the Japanese Professional Baseball League?

It's certainly possible Ohtani doesn't pan out, but I think you guys are putting waaaaaay too much stock into Spring Training results.

Ohtani has bust written all over him in part because the Angels want to fill the seats and get immediate cash return for their investment, when Ohtani should be spending at LEAST 1 year in the minors. He doesn't even look like he can handle AAA at the moment.

The game against Oakland might be an epic meltdown. I'm pretty sure he walked a handful, threw some wild pitches and beaned someone in like 2 innings in his last outing, lol. Talking Vaugn from Major League, but I doubt it's glasses/contacts causing Ohtani's issue.
