I remember it being on Saturday mornings when I was a kid in the mid '70's.

The character is quite old, originating from a comic book cover-dated 1940, only a couple years after Superman (debuted 1938) and one year after Batman (debuted 1939).

Sort of. DC still has some rights: they are allowed to call/name him as "Captain Marvel" inside/within their products (comic books and films), but DC can't title any of those products as "Captain Marvel."

However, to reduce confusion from his name matching Marvel's character and not matching the title of his works, DC has, over the years, more and more often referred to him as Shazam instead of Captain Marvel. DC has not yet announced which name he will be known by in this film.
