There's a difference between saying the schools make money off the kids and saying they are taken advantage of.

All of those words and yet the simple truth is millions and millions and millions of dollars come in to the schools for the performances these kids do on the field.

The college playoffs alone distribute half a billion dollars. And that's just for bowl season. That doesn't include TV rights, ticket sales, merch, etc for the regular season.

The kids don't get any of that. You don't need to look at failed leagues as some proof they aren't worth anything. The money is already there and they don't get any of it. College football makes a fuckton of money. It's really not the kids fault that title IX and other stupidity squanders most of it to things not related to their work.

At the end of the day if the kids want to go somewhere else to find more playing time and have their last shot at glory before most go into something other than pro football, then by all means let them.

But ok, let's do some math.

85 scholarship players and 129 FBS teams. That gives us about 10,965 players.

So let's take your "half a billion" of playoff/bowl money and guess what, each player would make...$46,000. That's it. The schools spend way more money than that on them every year, not to mention the scholarship. They already get over $20,000 in legit benefits and money as it is. Probably around $25,000 now with those stipends in some places.

Oh so well let's go ahead and double it. $92,000 per player. Still less than what it costs per scholarship at bigger schools and now much money is left for other things?

And that's if we did it even like. In reality, like most things college football, things are skewed. Only the top teams could even think about paying players like that, and that's not what any of us want for college football. So many teams actually lose money as it is.

It's a lot of money, but it's a lot of logistics, costs and a ton of players.

ok, so you project it that way but why not ask for clarification or simply accept it when someone says that isn't what they are saying?

The point was pretty clear. The schools get their money out of the efforts of these kids. They give them an education and the meals/training/etc as well as their moment in the spotlight and maybe an outside chance at making big bucks at the next level.

There is no real reason why those kids shouldn't be able to go to a team where they might get more playing time after they served their 4 years. For most of them it's their last time ever wearing a uniform. Why on earth is it so bad to let them actually see the field on a shittier team or possibly taste a bit of the better life on a bigger team before their career is over?

You can keep making this about something that it isn't, but the concept is pretty straight forward as is.
