da55bums I'm sorry for your loss. I have two black labs myself, and have had black labs all my life. The last one I had it took me a week before I got over her death and it took me two years before I got another one. I've had my current two professionally trained I just don't have the time or the enough places to go to do blind retrieve training. Trust IMO is the biggest hurdle one must have with a hunting dog. We has hunters tend not to trust our dogs as much as we should. I've gotten to the point now I just send my dog up wind to the last area I saw the bird go down and let the nose do the rest of the work. They always know better then we do.

Sorry for your loss, I have lost several hunting buddies and the grief is crippling. Losing a pet is tough enough, but losing a hunting companion and friend to boot is tougher.

Well I had my turn yesterday guys. My beautiful little Brittany had to be put down after 13+ wonderful years. Before the shot, they had to ask if she had bitten anyone in the past two weeks.

That one choked me up real good...that dog never even growled at a person her entire life.

Wonderful pointer and the finest dog I have ever and will ever own.

(((Lucy)))

Thanks guys. The thing about dogs is that they define periods of our lives. My son was two when we got the britty and he's 16 now so if I had to choose an era of my life to live over and over for eternity, it'd be during the time we had our Lucy.

Very sorry for your loss. Two years ago I lost 3 of my pointers overa two month span.

Husker- Nice little 8 year old female, Got cancer in her eye.
Sooner- The most high energy dog I have owned. She was also 8, died during whelping. Pup got stuck in the crown, Vet tried to save her but could not. Two puppies lived BayloR and Sooner 2, Both are at Bent Creek outfitters training.
Maggie- Just a good old all around dog. She was 12 and I got her when she was 6 wks old.

My sympathies to you as well~

A few days have passed and it's getting easier. Carrying her in and out, up and down the steps has been taxing the past few weeks. I built her a ramp last year and it worked great but she even got too weak for that.

No we just have my wife's Yorkie...anyone ever hunt pheasants and grouse with a Yorkie?!

Sorry for your loss.

I lost my good puppy dog this summer. We were never destined to be friends, she was abused by men and didn't trust them, I never liked small dogs (she was a big Pom), but we grew on each other.

I've been fortunate to have several good dogs in my life. I hurts each time one goes to the great beyond.

Hopefully we'll meet back up one day.

Sorry to hear that brother. Losing any pet is hard but losing your hunting partner makes it that much tougher. Had to put two labs (Abbey & Molly) down in my lifetime and 7 pets total.

It's never easy
