NOTES ON THE SELECTION OF LB SHAUN DION HAMILTON

· Hamilton is the 472nd selection made by the Redskins in the Common Draft era (since 1967) and the 57th sixth-round selection in that time frame. He is the 83rd sixth-round selection by the Redskins all-time since the institution of the draft in 1936.

· Hamilton is the second linebacker from Alabama selected by the Redskins in the last two drafts, joining LB Ryan Anderson (No. 49 overall in 2017). Including the selections of DL Jonathan Allen and DL Da’Ron Payne in the 2017 and 2018 drafts, respectively, the Redskins have now selected a defensive lineman and linebacker from Alabama in back-to-back drafts.

· Hamilton is the 25th player from the University of Alabama selected by the Redskins all-time, joining B Riley Smith (1936), B Charley Holm (1939), E Sandy Sanford (1940), T Fred Davis (1941), G Ed Hickerson (1941), G Tony Leon (1943), B Bobby Jenkins (1945), T Fay Mills (1946), B Harry Gilmer (1948), B Lowell Tew (1948), T Dick Flowers (1949), E Ed White (1950), B Eddie Salem (1951), C Elliot Speed (1951), B Billy Hicks (1956), T Billy Neighbors (1962), E Tommy Brooker (1962), DB Steve Higginbotham (1972), DT Thomas Rayam (1990), T Chris Samuels (2000), G Arie Kouandjio (2015), DL Jonathan Allen (2017), LB Ryan Anderson (2017) and DL Da’Ron Payne (2018).

· Alabama’s 25 all-time selections by the Redskins are third-most from any school in franchise history, trailing only Notre Dame (34) and USC (30).

· Hamilton becomes the third player selected by the Redskins all-time with the No. 197 overall pick, joining T Len Vella (1962) and QB Gus Frerotte (1994).

I didn’t know much about him prior to the draft but he is one of my favorite picks. When healthy, he has been celebrated and performed at every level to the highest degree. Smart and disciplined players with instincts are rare. I think the last time we had one leading our defense, it was LBF.

Would you rather draft a guy with talent, that could be very good, if healthy in the fifth round

Or

Would you rather draft a guy, you hope can make the active roster, but you aren’t really sure if he can make the roster on talent, and realistically, he will be out of the league within the period of his rookie contract (this is what a fifth usually does)?

Been burning through Bama replays for the past three seasons since we know have so many Bama players on the Defense.

When healthy this kid gets it done. And the only real issue is the knee. I think the Knee cap break was a freak thing and if he is fully healed from the ACL tear, we might have a long term contributor of ST and at ILB eventually.

The problem I have is everyone keeps saying "when healthy". That is not a good way to start out in describing a prospect.

Thing is, yes he had the ligament injury. The KNee cap was a freak injury. And I would actually take a bone break over a ligament injury any day. Think he will be healthy, and we got him in the 6th. Plus we arent expecting him to start.

In the 2nd or 3rd I would have been wondering about the pick... in the 6th, if a 6th rounder can be a steal, this guy might be it.

I thought he had an ACL tear in 2016? My point is, I would rather take a less talented player who can stay healthy than a talented player who has had season ending injuries two years in a row. We need ILB help...no doubt about it and I would have rather taken a healthy ILB prospect.

I would rather take a GOOD ILB prospect like this kid, than a healthy lesser prospect. Especially when we are talking the 6th round.

And the ACL is a ligament injury. Yes he had that in 2016, and the fractured knee cap in 2017.
