Romo's possible retirement isn't an issue cap wise. We're past the May 12th deadline so even if Romo retired today his future dead money would only accelerate into 2017. Currently $10.7M of the Cowboy's future dead money related to Romo is slated to be accounted for in 2017 anyway. There is a total of $8.9M which is due to be accounted in the 2 years after 2017 which would be affected. If Romo retired before May 12th 2017 that money would accelerate into the 2017 cap figure. However, Romo is due to earn $14M in 2017. If he retires the Cowboys wouldn't have that $14M against them.

In 2017 cap terms it's $14M if he doesn't retire and $8.9M if he does. If Romo isn't going to play in 2017 it would actually help the Cowboys out if he announced it before the 2017 season, (now there's a novelty).

All teams can move cap money back so if the Cowboys want to spend more again in 2017 they'll have to restructure someone else's contract. The Cowboys aren't in cap problems. The bigger problem will be replacing Romo.

I was wrong...really didn't think that hit was much more than a twisted back, but it is what is is...6 to 10 weeks...ouch!

If Dak can win 4-5 games over that stretch...maybe, but its really starting to look like the end of the road for Romo now.

Romo is like expired milk. Might still be good for awhile longer, but you're pushing it.

Romo cannot catch a break. The NFC East just got more interesting with their multiple story-lines.

NFCE may not be the best division (now) but it is never boring or easy to predict.

They should trade for Kaepernick.

you are usually right on with your numbers, but damn to you have a confusing delivery.
The issue is the dead money. Romo still has $32M not yet allocated against a cap year. For a player that you are assuming may not play that absolutely is a cap impact. If they had not restructured him this $32M would only be like $12M!!! If Dak doesn't work out and they bring in another QB, they also still pay Romo and this new QB.

Not sure where the bolded came from. In 2017, if Romo doesn't retire his cap hit is $24.7M ($14M base; $10.7M bonuses), not $14M. If he retires this time next year his 2017 cap hit is $10.7 and 2018 is $8.9M.

spotrac.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/tony-romo-2447/

Romo is being paid $8.5M in 2017 and the Cowboys are also accounting for $12.335M of dead money. That's all dealt with so ignore it.

After the 2016 season the Cowboys will still have a dead money figure of $19.6M. This is money that has already been paid to Romo that the Cowboys haven't accounted for yet. $5M relating to Romo's signing bonus and $5.7M relating to the salary restructures, (made in 2013 and 2014), will be accounted for in 2017. Nothing can change those figures and nothing can get the Cowboys out of accounting for them. The Cowboys are fully prepared for that $10.7M total and it will be in all their budgets for next year.

All that's left is a $5.7M cap charge against the Cowboys in 2018 and a $3.2M cap charge in 2019. Nothing can get the Cowboys out of accounting for those charges. All Romo's retirement will do is accelerate those final 2 cap charges into 2017. If Romo plays in 2017 he will be due a salary of $14M. Obviously the 2018 and 2019 cap charges wouldn't be accelerating. If he does retire then he won't be due $14M in salary and the cap charges will accelerate into 2017.

If Romo is with the Cowboys in 2017 he'll have a cap figure of $24.7M. If he's not with the Cowboys in 2017 he'll have a cap figure of $19.6M and all cap debts will be paid.

The 2 questions for 2017 will be 1) Whether Romo wants and is able to play; 2) Do the Cowboys want to pay him $14M. Those questions will determine the far less important $5.1M difference in the 2017 cap figure.

Later edit: the current dead money figure is $31.935M. The Cowboys are accounting for $12.335M of that in the 2016 cap figure.

Again, no he isn't being paid $8.5M in 2017.
His 2017 base salary is $14M and his bonus is $10.7M if he is on the team the whole season. That's $24.7M. I think you are confusing it again. Those are the 2016 amounts.

It was a typo on my part. You corrected me before I had time to edit it, (which is fair enough).

"Romo is being paid $8.5M in 2017 and the Cowboys are also accounting for $12.335M of dead money. That's all dealt with so ignore it." - should read 2016 NOT 2017.

OK, sorry. Should have realized that. I know your numbers are usually correct.
