I'd like to see a first time major winner.

Hoping somebody takes out Shriekapova, and that one of the vets (Radwanska or Kerber) or one of the youngsters takes the trophy.

Honestly, the draw hasn't been this open since Screamapova fluked her way to her first French Open title. If she doesn't win it this year with Serena, Vika, and Li all out, then she's truly pathetic.

Maybe Simona Halep can win it.

That would certainly be interesting, Sportingly. I've never thought she had the weapons to do it, but with this field, maybe.

I was thinking it might be a good opportunity for spitfire Cibulkova to do some damage again. She's got the top half, though, which is harder.

In the bottom half, there's really just nobody. Ivanovic, Jankovic, Kvitova are all brain scrambles and could lose to a player outside the top 50 any given day. And Kuznetsova is now a dangerous darkhorse, IMO.

If Stephens doesn't at least make the 4th round, she should be ashamed of herself given her draw.

I like Halep too. I think she can win it.

She is due to win a Major. I think this may be it. She wins so many non majors when all of the top players are split up.

I think Halep winning even with a decimated field would be only slightly less shocking than Schiavone's win.

Until this year, she had only made it past the 2nd round of a major twice, never made it past the 2nd round of the French Open at all, and gone out in the first round of the French 3 of the 4 years she played the tournament.

Radwanska out now.

Masha will commit seppuku if she doesn't win the tournament.

Isn't it funny? The same thing was said at last year's Wimbledon when with the departure of Serena, Aggie Radwanska was thought to be a sure thing for the championship. Granted that Sharapova is better than Radwanska being a former champion here, WTA tennis (FO) is like a box of chocolate, you never know what you gonna get.

Probably true considering the fact that there are too many headcases in WTA. But just as you think a player like Sam Stosur might flame out then, boom, she gets in.

Hmm. While it would be nice to see Stosur win this for the first time, unless she backed it up and became a fixture at 2nd weeks at future majors, I would be disappointed.

I don't want to see someone win a title, then struggle to make the 2nd week at most majors for the next 1-1.5 years.

I would rather see Jankovic on hard courts than clay courts, as on hard courts it forces her to not be so much of a defensive player (even though she can never change that). Her runs at the AO and USO the previous years had her playing better tennis overall IMO.

I haven't decided if there's a woman I want to see win this one yet, given the remaining contestants. No one has captured my imagination yet. I haven't seen Halep play before, so if I get a chance at this tourney, maybe her.

so the top half for the quarters is looking like it'll be:

masha vs. muguruza
bouchard vs. suarez-navarro

i really can't predict what's going to happen there.

the bottom half plays to get into the quarters tomorrow. i think i'd predict this for the quarters on the bottom half after tomorrow:

kuznetsova vs. halep
jankovic vs. petkovic (though it would be awesome to see the french qualifier, bertens, make it through)

Yep, Muguruza did win, so the top half that I listed below is correct.
