I looked this one up. I didn't realize they've only played 12 times. West Virginia leads the series 12-0. They played every season between 2006-12, but it's been sporadic to say the least. They played in 1911, 1914-15, 1923, and 1997 as well. The average score is 43-13. Yikes. If either Pitt or Penn St couldn't be worked out I'd like to see the Thundering Herd and the Mountaineers begin a new tradition. Is Marshall-West Virginia still a rivalry?
Regarding Penn St-West Virginia, they played every year from 1947-1992, 1992 being the last time they met. Penn St leads the all-time series 48-9-2. They're slated to meet again in 2023. Damn, that's too long. What actually helped put these rivalries on ice was, of course, conference involvement. In this case, the creation of The Big East. For whatever reason Penn St, if I'm not mistaken, turned down an offer to become a member. In 1993, they joined the Big-10, giving them 11 teams and the precursor to the names of these conferences not making numerical sense (i.e. the Big-10 at one point had 12 and the Big XII has 10; LOL). But, I digress.
In 1991, there were several independent teams. Had the Big East added a few more they would've been the Godfather of the Conference Championship game and not the SEC, which did so in 1992. Could you imagine a conference with Syracuse, Miami, VA Tech, Pitt, West VA, Rutgers, Temple, Boston College, Penn St, South Carolina, Florida St, and Louisville? That would be bad ass. I'm just sayin'.
