It was great music wasn't it.

Im not the biggest fan of Trudeau, but he got it right. You can't speak about how great a man he was without sheading a few salt from your eyes

Even though we knew it was coming, it doesn't make it sting any less.

RIP, Music man.

Even though I was not a Hip fan, nor could I probably even recognize a song of theirs, I "appreciate" the way he went out. Doing that farewell tour/last concert was pretty badass. Many of these rockstars go out on overdoses or just keel over. He spent his last year continuing to entertain all of Canada.

Ok, I'm read up on them now. My condolences to all my Canuck brethren on here, glad he was surrounded by his loved one when he passed.

I remember the local alternative station in Baltimore when I was a kid went out of their way to find some "obscure" artists and the program director around 89 seemed to discover 'Hip. Played it all the time and I just loved it. Then a few years later I was manager of a record store and a label rep gave me a copy of Road Apples and I played the SHIT out of it. I thought they were gonna be HUGE.

But then Nirvana happened, and THip just never did. At least not down here.

Next year they released "Fully Completely" and I played it all the time, but it was too late. Screaming flannel shitheads had taken over.

I think it's important to not forget perhaps the most important thing that shaped Gord's life. His character.

When he found out he was dying he didn't retreat into himself. Instead he went out and fought for equality for first nations and shone a light on indigenous issues in Canada. A true measure of a person's character is that when things go to absolute shit for themselves they still try to do right by others. Gord Downey passed this test with flying coloUrs.

I do not think I ever heard anything from them, besides on HNIC but he seemed cool and I am sorry he died so young.

If any of you wonder, Jeff Lemire is a Canadian comic writer and artist. His Essex County Trilogy is a beautiful series of stories about family, time, aging, loneliness, and hockey.

I highly recommend it.

(Hmmm, I guess we cannot post Amazonian links)

One of the best musicians to ever come out of Canada. We are a lesser country now because of Gord's passing. RIP.

Ive heard it said before but not "making it" in the States probably helped build them up in canadians eyes/minds/hearts. If i may generalize ... I dont think its so much as we felt sorry for them so we embraced them fully (and completely :eyebrows: ) but we felt bad that we knew they were good and nobody elsewhere in the world wanted to explore their music and give them a chance ... just a part of the cdn inferiority complex maybe lol

I can remember, a couple of tours back they played Rogers Arena one night and sold the building outwith $75 dollar tickets and then the next night they played a 750 seat venue in Seattle with $30 tickets and tickets were still available (cdn dollars to you assholes wanting to make a currency exchange joke - lol)

I remember when they were on SNL in the 90's and i thought ... this is it ... this is their break ... but looking back, they had to know, with the content of their music and how so canadiana they were, they werent gonna break big in the US. I can vividly remember being psyched up for them for that snl appearance and they come out with "grace too" and Gord changes the first lyrics and basically introduces the band to the US on a grand stage by singing "she said I'm Tragically Hip" ... gave me goosebumps ... and then they were done and i thought ... "theyre (the US populace) not gonna get this"
