Red Wings will wait until next season to retire Nicklas Lidstrom's No. 5 jersey in ceremony | MLive.com

The Detroit Red Wings' tribute to Nicklas Lidstrom, one of the greatest players in NHL history, will have to wait until next season

The club was planning on raising Lidstrom's No. 5 jersey banner to the rafters at Joe Louis Arena during a pregame ceremony Feb. 5, prior to a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, as per the original NHL schedule, which has been scrapped.

But the Red Wings, after consulting with Lidstrom, decided during the lockout to hold off on the ceremony until 2013-14. They were uncertain whether there would be a season and there were logistical and planning issues in setting up such an event on short notice. Lidstrom and his family moved back to Sweden last summer.

There also were concerns about honoring one of their greats amid all the negativity surrounding the lockout.

I think that's smart. No need to rush. Take the time to plan a proper ceremony, he deserves it.
