Trades

Jonathan Drouin, Andrej Sustr to Nashville for Ryan Ellis, Frederic Allard, 2017 2nd round pick and a 2018 6th round pick

I still have Drouin being moved. Nahville have a deep forward group but could use some more firepower upfront therefore they acquire Drouin who they have had interest in for some time now. The Preds have the best top 4 D core in the league and therefore they can afford to move Ellis and strengthen their team upfront. The Preds also get Sustr who can be a cheap, solid 3rd pairing defenseman for them.

For the Bolts they get a righty shot puckmoving defenseman that the bolts covet. Ellis is 26 and currently has 2 years left on his deal with a cap hit of $2.5 mill. With Allard the Bolts get a 19 year old, former 3rd round pick who is also a righty shot puckmoving defenseman. The bolts need to address their defense both at the NHL level and in the system which they do in this trade, they also get a few draft picks as well to sweaten the deal.

Jason Garrison to Calgary for 2018 4th round pick

The bolts will look to move Garrison out who He has 1 year left on his deal at $4.6 mill. The bolts will need to retain salary in the deal to make it happen but they need to move Garrison in order to move his salary and obtain an upgrade on the blueline. I think a young playoff contention team like the Flames or Senators could use a little depth on the blueline and in the process try and acquire a veteran with playoff experience.

J.T Brown and a 2017 3rd round pick to Las Vegas for a 2017 6th round pick

Now this deal comes down the expansion draft. Vegas have to pick a player from each team but teams are looking at the idea of trading a certain player who can be claimed as well as draft pick so that player (J.T Brown for this example) is classified as the claimed player. The Lightning therefore can ensure the keep youngsters who they would like to remain such Dotchin, Paquette and Koekkeok and not expose them to be claimed.

Expansion Draft

As mentioned in the last trade of the trades section, J.T Brown is classified as the claimed player as the Lightning and Vegas reach on angreement via trade route.

Pending UFA's & RFA's
Ondrej Palat signs a 6 year deal worth $33 million ($5.5 AAV)
Tyler Johnson signs a 5 year deal worth $25 million ($5 AAV)
Peter Budaj signs a 2 year deal worth $3 million ($1.5 AAV)
Jake Dotchin signs a 2 year deal worth $2.5 million ($1.25 AAV)

With Drouin moved Palat become the teams #1 priority. He got off to a slow start but finished the season strong and his game is valuable to the team as he does it all. Johnson has been injury plauged the last couple of seasons but still remains a core off this team. Budaj played well last season mainly for the Kings and could generate interest on the market but bolts keep hold off him to provide a veteran experience around Vasy. Dotchin was a real suprise when recalled, player better than anticaped but don't see the Lightning making a huge commitment to a player who is only 35 games into his NHL career.

NHL Draft

14th overall pick Juuso Valimaki - Defenseman - Tri City Americans (WHL)

Mike Morreale NHL.com - Jan. 20th: "The two-way defenseman has brought more assertiveness to his game in his second WHL season. Valimaki (6-1, 204) has 39 points (12 goals, 27 assists) in 38 games and has shown more offensive drive and confidence in his game."

Jeff Marek of Sportsnet - Mar. 8th: "A good all-around blueliner who’s enjoyed great experience at the junior and international level. Not huge, but possesses great awareness. Has drawn comparisons to Olli Juolevi (VAN)."

FA

Trevor Daley signs a 3 year deal worth $9 million ($3 AAV)
Brian Boyle signs a 2 year deal worth $3.6 million ($1.8 AAV)
Brian Flynn signs a 2 year deal worth $2 million ($1 AAV)

Yzerman has said he's trying to add some more mobility on the blueline, some more puck moving ability that will able to generate more offense from the blueline. They were able to add Ellis in the Drouin trade and now they add Trevor Daley who has known to be a puck moving defenseman who can realy skate. The addition of Ellis and Daley are not big names but they are upgrades and help to solidify the defesne.

I think the Lightning will want to add Boyle back and he will be more than welcom to return. He didn't want to leave the organization but it's the nature of the business. The Lightning could really use his size, his ability to win faceoffs and kill penalties and the fact he can add offense down the lineup.

The bolts also add Brian Flynn on a 2 year deal. He's been a nice 4th liner for the Habs but wasn't a consistent feature in the lineup. Flynn would be a nice repalcement for Brown as he's a solid role player who can kill penalties.
