These guys make good money.

The New England Patriots have elevated the salaries of four practice-squad players, boosting the weekly pay of defensive end Jake Bequette, wide receiver Josh Boyce, offensive lineman Chris Barker and defensive tackle Joe Vellano to $10,000 per week. Practice squad players have a customary weekly salary of $6,300, though teams have license to pay more than those practice-squad salaries.

The elevated pay can be interpreted as a reward for strong contributions by these four for their work in practice and helping the team to prepare for each week. Each of these players have spent significant time on the Patriots' 53-man roster, and Bequette and Boyce are both former draft picks of the team (Bequette, third round in 2012; Boyce, fourth round in 2013).

It tends to keep them on the Patriots practice squad and away from poachers. Any team can sign practice squad players, but it's an unwritten rule that no one does unless it's a critical emergency. St Louis signed some guy named Mauro off the Steelers practice squad today and people are up in arms and all over Bruce Arians.

Belichick is protecting the Patriots from the loss of guys who have NFL game experience.

You nailed it Ken. Patriots are not "hiding players on the practice squad" they are paying them to stick around.....

No. Being paid more than the average PS salary would never keep a player from being poached(signing with another team). Poached players who are signed off the practice squad must remain on the 53 man roster for 3 weeks. That's 3 weeks of minimum NFL salary. Which could be anywhere from $24.7k to $33.5k per week depending on experience. That's $75-100k for 3 weeks. Very few if any player would turn that down without the guarantee of being activated to his current team's 53 man roster.

Players are signed off other teams PS routinely. Mauro would be the third player Arizona has signed off another team's PS this season.

Never? Players often decide they should wait and take the chance to get coached by BB and get promoted to the Patriots. Some take the first offer, some take the coaching (and the money)
Patriots often match the rookie minimum for players they want to develop.....

$75-100k guaranteed for 3 weeks of work with the possibility of remaining on the 53 man roster & making a lot more. That $75-100k is almost what an average PS player makes for an entire season. Can you name one player who turned down being signed by another team off his current PS without being signed to his current team's 53 man roster?

Here's another:
Shead, a second-year player from Portland State who was promoted to Seattle’s active roster Nov. 27, also was on the Seahawks’ active roster last season for four games and said he didn’t want to go anywhere else, confident another chance with the Seahawks was coming. He also signed originally with Seattle because it was interested in him as both a corner and a safety.
“I was just being patient, waiting for my opportunity,’’ he said.

and another:

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported that Gurley would be signed to the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad. Gurley had an offer to join the Vikings' 53-man roster last year, but declined it in order to stay with the Packers' practice squad.
