I don't recall which season the FCS designation came into being, but that was basically a re-naming of 1-AA, which first came into being in the 1978 season, and expanded in 1982. In creating 1-AA (FCS), the NCAA took some of the smaller Division I programs and larger Division II schools to make the new division. Prior to that, it was just Division I, Division II & Division III.

First thing I thought of was AA8 saving us against a Daniel Sams led McNeese St. a few years ago.
Michigan State wasted a pick on him.

Before the Division I/II/III set-up, there was Major College (also called University Division) and what became Divisions II & III were referred to as College Division I & College Division II. I think that only lasted for 4 years before the Division I/II/III set-up began.

Before the College Division was split into two ranks (in the late 1960's or early 1970's), there was only Major College and Small College, and there was no official differentiation between the two until 1937.

The reason for this history lesson will be explained in my next post.

Now, while UCLA has not played any FCS/1-AA schools that I know of since that division was established, they did play games against non-major schools in 1938, 1941 and 1943-45. In fact, they lost at San Diego Navy in 1943 & 1944, and lost to St. Mary's Pre-Flight in 1945.

Notre Dame played and beat College of the Pacific in 1940 (Pacific didn't earn Major College status until 1943), and won a game at Carnegie-Mellon in 1941. The latter game is understandable since the two colleges played each other on a regular basis before CMU lost its Major College status following the 1940 season.

West Virginia played several games against non-major schools between 1937 & 1945, losing at Western Reserve in 1938 and tying Cincinnati in 1940.

USC has never even played a MAC school, though they will play one next year and in true USC fashion they play the best from there.
