OP didn't say who had the best career ever. He just asked who was the best defensive player ever. Therefore, Lord Watt is easily the best ever. Nobody has even come close to making as big as an impact on the field as Watt on the defensive side of the ball. If this said who had the best career ever then it would be Reggie White. But if I had to select one person in their prime on D it would be Watt.

/thread

Watt 6 seasons in, 83 games, 76 sacks, FF 15, Tackles 299,
White 6 seasons in, 88 games, 95 sacks, FF 13, Tackles 613

I think a lot of fans listen to announcers whose job is to sell the games and current players. Watt is great, but White was considerately better at his peak than he is.

1st - LT
2nd - Reggie
3rd - everyone else, all of whom are truly great players. I'd probably go Deion or Mean Joe.

Mike Haynes was the best all around CB I've seen play. Deion was the best cover corner.

Never saw Butkus in his prime and I know he was great, but no one listed could carry his jock? Never really understood that saying either. I'm stepping out there on that "No one would want to carry Dick's or anyone else's jockstrap."

I agree with Haynes being the best overall corner, he was hell in man coverage as well. I don't know that Deion was even better in that way than MH was. He could absolutely mirror very good receivers.

I think Deion was the absolute best at man coverage. I know peeps like to claim that Deion was a bitch or soft, but he wasn't. Not imo. He was physical enough in the run game when he had to be and was more than up to the challenge of dealing with physical WRs. That said. If the footb all gods let me select any CB I want to be my #1 cover CB always taking the other team's top WR. I'd pick Haynes and wouldn't bat an eye. Best overall CB I've seen play and I was serious as fuck when I said it. I'd rank Haynes right below Deion coverage-wise and above Mel Blount, Wille Brown, Champ, Darrell Green, whoever. And was physical in the run game as any CB I've seen including Blount who was a beast himself.

I'm not saying he should be the best defensive player ever, but if we're talking cornerbacks, one of the most underrated was Jimmy Johnson. He was as good in pure coverage as anybody, but got little recognition because he played on some average to bad 49er teams until the early 1970's. It was then he was recognized as the All Pro that he was.

I saw him only in his declining years, but noted NFL historian Paul Zimmerman raved about the guy, and put him and Deion as the 2 corners on his all time defensive team.

Suh was on his way before Goodell neutered him. So I voted Deion. Won SBs everywhere he went.

I choose LT because I favor Linebackers and he changed the game.

Sanders would have been better, if they ever threw the ball in his area .... the guy was amazing

My pick would have been Jack Lambert ... great Linebacker and great Teammate

I voted LT. A couple of guys not on the list that deserve consideration are Chuck Bednarik and Herb Adderly. Herb was at least as good a cover guy as Deion. He went an entire season without giving up a TD pass.

I'd put Richard Dent on this list ahead of Singletary.

Good call.........very good call...Singletary was a very intelligent lb`er who could hit and make the defense go round.........But I always thought of Dent as a sack master and a disrupter who created holes for Mongo and Hampton.........I definetley would take Dent over Mad mike.

Sanders was trashy and a phony to boot. It was well known he spent most of his down time in Atlanta at strip clubs snorting coke while professing his ''faith''.
He eventually grew up a bit, but I have no respect for the blowhard POS he was in his Atlanta days.

Or any of his days............To hell with him and his new found religion bullshit...........Hes just trying to mask his past.

Its tough to pick out of:
Ray Lewis
LT
Butkus
Reggie
Deacon and
Mean Joe............

All are good choices, but I stuck with Reggie.
I think he was better than Butkus.......(Don't remember much of him.).I watched Walter Payton as a rookie at the ripe old age of 13.
I don`t like what Ray and LT stood for........
Didn`t watch much of Deacon and Mean Joe.........

So although I hated/still do GB,i`ll go with Reggie White.....Guy was a tiger in sheeps clothing with a great personality.............The man could absolutely play.

Neon whiffed on as many tackle attempts as he made, probably more. He really did suck at trying to get grown men onto the turf.
He was excellent in man coverage though, but Haynes was the best cover corner I've ever seen.

Why let Suh play by separate rules than everybody else adheres to ?
If he was good enough he wouldn't need them anyway. Geno Atkins was a far better player before the ACL, he's back close to 100% and he is right there with Aaron Donald as the best playmaking DT in the league.

Playing DT is more about controlling gaps for the entire game than making a splash play here or there i'd take a guy like Suh, Greene, or even a 5 tech like Justin Smith anyday over a pass rushing specialist like Aaron Donald

Geno Atkins is the best at gap control and collapsing pockets, plus he's excellent at getting to the QB.
I think Donald is an excellent player, but he doesn't maintain gap control, which weakens The Rams' run defense.

Reggie was an Eagle... not a Packer. He was much better in his Eagle days. (I know he was a Packer too, but the REAL REGGIE was an Eagle.

He was still the best defensive player in the game in GB, but no doubt his best seasons came in Philly.
Amazingly he played DT a lot and still averaged 16 sacks a year.

Real Reggie won a SB with the Packers. Beagles were just preparing him for the big stage on a real winner.
