Read on bleacher report that sources are saying we will be using the pistol offense this year. It makes sense to me considering the lack of athletism Rees shows.

Good idea. I'm very worried about our offense

You have to have a mobile qb to run the pistol. Is this telling us what is in store for Zaire. I would cringe to see Tommy run. That would be the cap gun.

I remember Colin Kaepernick running the pistol at Nevada. I can't think of two more different QB's than Rees and Kaepernick.

But I also remember the Steelers using it when Rothlesburger injured his leg and was pretty immobile,
So it isn't just for qbs who can scramble.

I don't put much stock into what they put out. Tommy is more of a traditional QB, it wouldn't make any sense.

Agreed, just thought it was interesting.

BK - We talked to Coach Ault about the pistol. We have not turned into a pistol offense though. How much we use it remains to be seen.

HC Brian Kelly on the pistol: “I think it fits some of the personnel that we have. George is a guy I wanted to get downhill.”

BK - in year one we ran some pistol and I felt like it was something I wanted to get into a little bit more.

This is what BK said about the pistol offense when asked in today's press conference.

Perhaps BK is using it moreso with Zaire than Rees? It can be used with an immobile QB but imho the set's advantages are best exploited by a mobile QB due to taking advantage of using the 'last' option, the QB running.

It'd concern me to see Rees running that consistently but it could be run 'just enough' to keep D's honest and the offense able to exploit option 1 or 2 before having him try and find a hole (often). I'd like seeing Zaire run it though, it might help him in the passing game if that's where he's struggling (reads?).

It'd be a nice change of pace that would throw off D's or make them prepare more for the Pistol than they'd like as the season progresses...

Hendrix is also mobile enough to take advantage of the opportunities available with the pistol.

Exactly Irish7478, especially if BK doesn't want to burn that redshirt. If the execution is crisp, QB swapping here and there can be quite effective and would make it harder on D's, which I can see BK doing, anything that helps take pressure off his O and puts it back on their D.

You almost look at it like New England's offensive approach; it doesn't matter who the skill players are w/Brady back there, you execute well and follow your progressions, checkdowns and dumps and the average player will get his necessary average on the play call usually. Even though Rees isn't TB, the better he executes the more likely these young-men who don't have much of a name yet will start having one, the line is where it starts though, their play should set the tone.

I pretty much watched all of Colin Kaepernick's televised games for the four years he was at Nevada. Kelly is more than likely going to use either Zaire or Hendrix in this package but probably also wanting to be able to defend it too. I think they're boyscouts and are just preparing. Look at all the trouble the option gave them a few years ago against Navy. I think they're killing two birds with one stone. They are finding spots for Hendrix and also preparing for what some teams will run against them. Trust me they aren't goig to be running Tommy Rees. Lets get real.
