I'd be very wary of trading for either of the Philth MI. Utley is a HUGE health concern and Rollins is no longer anything special.

Agreed, esp re Utley. But Rollins is only 33 and is still a significant upgrade over Stamos (he even has stolen 14/17 bases), and I think he would shift into a higher gear once he got into the heat of a pennant race again. Plus he would be an effective hitter at AT&T - speed plus XBH power.

All else being equal, we should show some interest, IMHO.

I like Stamos for the future, but even more I like getting rid of the biggest hole in our lineup now.

Baltimore Orioles acquire Philadelphia Phillies' slugger Jim Thome - ESPN

Thome to the O's for two prospects.

Not in an irrevocable, "burn-the-ships" kind of way, but will be entertaining offers, no doubt.

I wonder what it would take to get Rollins, or even Utley? My guess is too much, and we are not exactly prospect rich.

It's almost inevitable that they trade the Hawaiian and Hamels.

They're two of the best options at what they do on the market, and the Phils could use them to plug up some nasty holes within their roster. They get some youth on that team and they still could compete next year and on. Their roster is old, but its of the old and great variety vs the old and dead variety we used to rock.

This. I don't know if SF has the pieces to acquire Rollins, but I would love it if they tried.

So let me get this right:

A 33 year old SS, who is below average, due $11MM a year through 2014, when hell be 35...

And on top of that, we'd be giving up talent?!?

Good grief :kev:

Looking over the Philth roster, the only two guys they'll be unloading that I want are Utley and Hamels. We'd have to cut Zeets loose and give up a ton to get Hamels so that's not happening. Utley would depend on cost. Probably Crick plus ToJo?

Dunno....

Better to wait until 2015, and then sign him to a two year 18M contract.

This.

Remember when he resigned with Phily, we were happy we did not sign that contract?

If the Philth eat about half the $$, MAYBE I would be willing to go Peggy and Adrianza (or Craw)...

Let's address your concerns:

A 33 year old SS - hey, 33 is the new 29

who is below average - he's seventh among qualified NL SS's in OPS, and one good game would bump him to fourth.

He has a .781 OPS the last three years at AT&T - against OUR pitching

And if Rollins is below average, how would you characterize Craw?

due $11MM a year through 2014 - maybe the Phils would pick some of that up

And on top of that, we'd be giving up talent?!? - ya gotta give to get, and as has been stated before, most times prospects don't pan out

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

We are talking about acquiring a guy, originally from Oakland, who would be a significant upgrade to our weakest hitting spot during a pennant race where we are clearly very competitive already. He's the kind of player who could put us over the top.

As for gp's comment about offering 2yr/$18 mill, remember that was for the guy who turned out to be the WS MVP. How much was that worth to us?

Just trying to present the case, Counselor.

The only way the Phillies give up Utley is if they KNOW he is done, health-wise. No reason to...they know they aren't going to get much for a guy that the rest of MLB knows that is on his last legs....

His OPS+ is 90. Park adjusted, he's well below average. And he's 33 -- it ain't getting better. For comparison, Craw is about 75 OPS+...and that's bad, but he's YOUNG and likely to get better. Moreover, going from bad to below average isn't worth giving up any significant talent, IMO.

I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree that Rollins would be a "significant" upgrade. By 2013, he's likely to not be an upgrade at all, and by 2014 likely to be a downgrade. All at the tidy sum of $11MM.

I don't agree. They've been told to cut payroll. He makes $15MM a year through 2013. His OPS+ is 180. One freaking eighty. He'd have to be AWFUL in the field to overcome that type of production. He's not awful.

I'd give up something to get him. Not sure how much though.

Cool...we'll disagree. If the Phillies think he's still "Utley"...than there isn't anyone else that they can get to replace him. The fans love him...and the Phillies aren't going to cut payroll by dumping a cornerstone player. Though, I think they would love for someone to come in and take some of Howard's contract. I have to believe that someone is getting bent over a table on a regular basis for this contract...
