That is interesting. I think it is really just a restructuring that makes it easier for Peters to play beyond this year if he chooses to. The way his contract was structured before, it was almost impossible for Philly to keep him beyond this season because of the cap figure.

More money up front for Peters ... this is why I don't worry about the cap; there are so many loop holes around it.

Just guessing at the details, you could see him getting the $8M signing bonus and $2.5M salary for 2017 fully guaranteed, then $11M in 2018 with half of that guaranteed, and then a non-guaranteed $11M in 2019.

That would give him the same amount of 2017 money, but free up $5M in cap space in 2017 for the team. It would also then make it more than likely that he stays in 2018 as half his 2018 pay would be guaranteed. Then 2019 would be the earliest they could cut him, and even then he would have a $2.6M cap hit if they did.

Good deal for Jason. Risky to guarantee that sort of money to a guy his age, but Peters is a bit of a special case. Been a difference maker and fairly durable.

But it puts the Eagles even further over the cap in 2018. Tough decisions will need to be made.

I fully expected Peters to be let go after this season which would have opened up a ton of cap money. We also have guys on 1 year contracts who we may want to re-sign like Jernigan and Alshon ... but then again we always find a way around the cap where it never seems to be an issue.

They gave him $15.5M guaranteed rather than the $10M non guaranteed he was getting for this season. Seems like the plan is to keep him for at least two years. If they cut him after this season the cap hit next year would be over $10M.

Peters is 35. Does he play until he is 37? I still doubt it, but I guess this means it is possible. Lane Johnson is probably annoyed but whatever, I could see Peters also finishing his career at guard.

After the restructured deal then yeah ... but they would have saved around 12 mil if they would have cut him after this season "prior" to this restructure.

Agreed. If they hadn't done this he likely would have been cut for sure after this year due to the cap hit. He knew it and didn't want to deal with the idea of going somewhere else, as he has a pretty good thing going with the Eagles, so he stayed put.

I wonder if that means they move Seumalo to center eventually.

Unless somebody knows more details, I believe his cap hit for next year goes lower. Peters did say he would be fine moving to LG next year if they want. I think Kelce very well could be traded, and Seuamalo takes over Center, if not then next year for sure.

I wouldn't expect his cap hit next year to go down. You have an 8 million signing bonus over three years which is $2.7M per year, and the numbers published indicates roughly a $5M guarantee in 2018 on top of that. So the absolute minimum cap hit for Peters in 2018 would $7.7M (more than likely he has another $5M guaranteed in 2018 to push the cap hit up to $12.7M), and I assume from the numbers his cap hit in 2017 would be about $5M.

It does, Old Duke, there is no doubt there. It also contains basic guarantees for future years, so Peters likes it because he feels he can commit to finishing his career here. But I don't know if there are still out clauses for the Eagles in those future years. I suspect there are.

One interesting tidbit is that Peters supposedly said Lurie got involved. He actually called Lurie his "best friend" which is a little much. But hey, if someone paid me $100 million or whatever Peters has gotten out of Lurie so far, he might be my best friend, too.

All in all, I am cool with this. Like the Celek signing, it really probably doesn't make sense financially. But Peters is a character guy you want to make happy as you build a team and a culture around Wentz.

Team leader. Good to have him around for a few years. I think we'll contend before his career is done. Good to keep some consistency around Wentz.

lane has been majorly overpaid as a RT. He is already making top 10 LT money. He has nothing to be annoyed about.

Peters going to LG makes a ton of sense to keep him playing a bit longer, and would still be very valuable to the eagles there.
