The New York Yankees are on track to open the season this week with baseball's seventh-highest payroll, their lowest ranking since 1992, according to projections by The Associated Press.

The Boston Red Sox will top the major leagues at about $223 million, ending the Los Angeles Dodgers' four-year run as the top spender. The San Francisco Giants will be second at around $203 million, and the Chicago Cubs are set to be third at about $183 million.

The Dodgers and Washington Nationals will each be at approximately $180 million, and the Los Angeles Angels will be next at about $170 million. The Yankees will be at around $167 million -- their lowest payroll since 2003.

Mike Trout is making 20% of the Angels payroll. That's gotta be a record for one player.

is that even more than Greinke is with AZ?

I'm pretty sure, either way, it's not a record.

Arietta is making 30% of the Phillies payroll

LOL

I stand corrected. Arizona's pitching staff makes up 1/2 their payroll, and Greinke makes 1/2 of their total pitching payroll. So he's in the 25% range of total salary.

Wow.

I've learned that payroll dictates expectations

Guess it's another gravy season for the Yanks

Well it is a fluid situation. The Phillies just signed Kingery for 6 years so that might change the percentages slightly.
But as for the original post- The Yankees lower payroll is a good thing. It means they have some good Young players.

Thanks. Back when ARod was pulling $30M a year, Yanks had a payroll north of $200M.

When I saw Trout's number for 2018 it jumped out at me as crazily disproportional, but clearly there are (much) worse offenders.
I don't know if "offenders" is a good word. It is just the way salaries are set up in MLB.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say their cost per win this year is going to be better than any time since the early to mid 80s.

I'd be curious how successful teams that have 1 player eating up over 20% of their total payroll have been historically.

i forget the article, but IIRC 15% was the magic number. Anyone taking up more than that and teams haven't been quite as successful.

I feel bad that the Red Sox wasted all that money......They could have bought some crappy Sam Adam's beer or some chowder instead...
