What does it mean? Hell if I know. But Palmer is the straw that stirs the Cardinals drink. If he leaves that team, the NFC West may become the weakest division in football.

Well, if Arizona picks up one of them, then we can re-evaluate. But what I am hearing is that they are contemplating drafting DeShone Kizer.

What 6 QBs would those be?

I guess they could go after romo but he is almost as old as palmer and more injury prone.

I doubt the Cowboys release Romo.

At this point, Dallas may not have much choice. They're currently $13 million over the cap. Even if they get rid of Romo, they would also have to seriously consider getting rid of Sean Lee, Jason Witten and Doug Free as well - just to give them room to manuever in the draft - let alone free agency. Even then, they'd only have $10 million in space to work with.

You think they'll find a trade partner to take on that salary??

Nope. I think he is a Cowboy next year.

They only get something like $5 million cap savings by cutting him. They aren't going to get back up near his quality for $5 million. Unless Romo requests to be released, I don't see it happening.

Hell, I'd be contacting Cleveland and San Francisco every day to see about trading Romo for a 5th or 6th pick.

I just looked it up. They save $14 million post-June 1st so I guess they could cut him then.

Excuse me!!!

Ahem, AFC South here and we don't take kindly to people stealing our title!

Yes, they could do that - and that would help them - but they'd still need to move on from other salaries as well. Looking at their cap situation - it appears that Jerry has been giving out bonus' and guaranteed money like it's candy.

Yeah, not cutting him means they're paying (cap hit) their backup $24M. In real dollars, $14M I think.

To me the most likely is he gets released. The 2017 salary isn't that bad for a "good" starting QB, but the final 2 years are an avg of $20M/yr when he is 37 & 38.

But anyway, on Palmer: yeah, could mean he's about to hang 'em up. But in nearly 24 years in the military, I've also seen some of my buddies get close to the end and stabilize their family for the final year or 2 while they finish it out. Sometimes it's about buying a house and having it set up by retirement, sometimes it's about the spouse landing a good job that they don't want to leave, sometimes it's about setting up kids to finish out HS in one spot. Palmer definitely has enough $ to operate 2 households, and retiring now also means he leaves something north of $18M on the table.

That's why I said Cleveland or SF. Since cutting Romo after receiving him in trade gives no dead money - either team could still draft a QB in the first or second round and then let him sit for a year while still not paying Romo his last 2 seasons of his contract.

Just one point because I've seen it a few times on here the last week or so:

You don't have to wait until June 1st to cut a player to realize the cap savings of spreading the hit over two years. You can cut him anytime (or almost) in the next league year and designate the cut a post-June 1st one.

The line of thinking makes some sense, but I don't know about the teams. if you're Cle or SF, why rent a $14M QB for one year when you aren't 1 player away from contending? That's in addition to the pick(s) it takes to trade. If you're 1 of the 2 worst teams in the league, get a fair priced journeyman for a year or 2 while you're trying to find your long term guy in the draft.

I think they need to move up then...whether DeShaun Jackson stay outside of the top 15 or not, it looks now like SF is going QB @ 2...Kizer or Tribusky I assume...CHI most likely will follow suit and take the other guy. Word is the Jets like Hackenberg and may pass on a QB early, but not sure about BUF.

It's possible 3 QBs come off the board by the 10th pick.

Exact reason I see Romo going to a team like Denver or AZ.
