I think the Padres are better than anyone thinks, but I do not see them competing for anything in '13.

Grendal is good (assuming he was not just a chemistry experiment); Headley is special; Cabrera is solid (in the current mold of D first SS); Richard and Volquez are solid 2/3 guys, but as 1/2's, you are in trouble; Kelly, Gyorko, and to lessor extents Decker, Clark and Banks could add some depth in the coming years.

Ownership, though, is the most important aspect that has been changed in your system that should be able to brighten your future.

You need to be able to hit better with these HIGH HIGH HIGH HIGH draft picks, though. When you are whiffing on a relatively regular basis with top-10 picks, you will never get to the next level.

We've made very poor first-round picks and our once solid pitching from top-to-bottom is now pretty shakey at starters - no one can deny that. I foresee run production being up, especially if Bud sticks to the aggressive base-running. I am very concerned about starting pitching.

I'm glad to see Luke Gregerson avoided arbitration.

He's going to be coveted as one of the best setup men in the league so I just hope we can keep him.

I could totally see us picking up someone like Ronny Cedeno.

Looks like the Padres made an "aggressive" offer last week and Detroit didn't budge. Somehow I don't expect to see this happen for us.

Ahhh, they wanted either Street or Gregerson. I'd do Street but not Luke. :2cents:

If the Padres refused those two deals, that tells me they don't really want Porcello. Street is an upper 2nd-tier closer and Gregorson is an upper tier setup guy. Porcello is a potential stud starter.

either of thse seem to be be no-brainer deals for a team that is not ready to contend this year (thus, a closer is a luxery, not a requirement).

:agree: It's drawing universal criticism among fans. They could almost get away with not being willing to part with Luke Gregerson, but Street?

If the Tigers start tanking quick but Porcello is lights-out and is having a career-making breakthrough, his cost is going to be astronomical. I say deal Street, bump Gregerson up to starter and see where we are going into the break. This guy could be an instant ace.

This probably has something to do with it.

but this is why you dont center your marketing campaign on a second tier guy who actually has some trade value.

They should focus on Alonso, Grendal, and they never should have traded Rizzo.

Well, the Giants are, as the roster sits right now, a non-contender and the doggies are a club-house disaster.

As absurd as that sounds on the surface, a little bit of thought makes you realize the West is totally open for a coup...

...and the Padres only need average offense behind that rotation and 'pen.

A solid 3 or 4 hitter has exponential value to this team.
