12/31 recap

I read your complaints about referee's mistakes yesterday. Did it ruin the top-flight action? Let's see:

Top 25:
Villanova over Creighton 80-70

Louisville over Indiana 77-62
Virginia Tech upsets Duke 89-75 (Or as I like to call it, "Virginia Tech's coming-out party". So I don't think Duke should panic.)
Georgia Tech upsets North Carolina 75-63 (This one, though, doesn't bode well for the Tar Heels.)
Florida State over Virginia 60-58
Xavier over Georgetown 81-76
Notre Dame over Pittsburgh 78-77 in OT

Other big games:
Clemson over Wake Forest 73-68
Murray State over Tennessee State 92-83 (Whoopsie)
Rider over Monmouth 93-90 in OT (Whoopsie)
Miami over NC State 81-63
Santa Clara over San Francisco 72-58 (Whoopsie)
Fresno State over Nevada 77-76

With a new year comes new promise, and thank god 2016 is over. How will 2017 begin? Let's see: (All times are Eastern)

Sunday:
Nebraska @ Maryland (12:00)
Syracuse @ Boston College (12:00)
Illinois State @ Loyola-Chicago (2:00)
Michigan @ Iowa (2:15)
Game of the Day: Providence @ Butler (3:00)
Minnesota @ Purdue (4:30)
Marquette @ Seton Hall (4:30)

New Mexico @ San Diego State (5:00)
Colorado @ Utah (6:30)
Ohio State @ Illinois (7:00)
Arizona @ Stanford (8:00)

Monday:
Lehigh @ Boston University (2:00)
Mississippi Valley State @ Arkansas-Pine Bluff (8:30)
Game of the Day: UL-Lafayette @ Little Rock (9:00)

By Tuesday, the madness will start up again. So with that upcoming, I now take my leave to watch the madness take place. And my analysis will resume around February 18th.
But that doesn't mean you won't see me 'till them. From time to time, I'll pop up when you least expect it...

With the Big East and WCC having similar makeup since 2013, there are probably a growing number of WCC fans who say their conference is just as good as their eastern counterparts (that is, the Big East) and even the A10 and the Power 5, and that the WCC's mid-major label is inaccurate.

Well with teams like Gonzaga and Saint Mary's in the fold, and consistently being a multi-bid league, you can make the argument that the WCC should no longer be considered a mid-major conference.

Please stop trying to compare the WCC and the Big East. The mid-major label is very accurate for the WCC. If the 4th best team in a conference isn't considered a top 150 team, you're a mid-major league. By contrast the 4th best team in the Big East is Xavier(at least this year, as it looks) and they're ranked in the top 20.

WCC is the absolute definition of a mid-major. Gonzaga is not, the WCC is.

1/7: Action outside of the Top 25

Surprised to see me here? Well, yes I did say I was on hiatus. But during these long Saturday's, the least I can do is give you some form of help.
Outside the Top 25, there's still a good number of games, and the least I can do during this period of "figuring things out" is show them to you: (All times are Eastern)

Pittsburgh @ Syracuse (12:00)
UMass @ VCU (1:00)
Maryland @ Michigan (3:15)
Mississippi State @ LSU (3:30)
Furman @ Chattanooga (5:00)
Alabama A&M @ Mississippi Valley State (5:00) (One of these teams is gonna get their 1st win of the year in this game!)
Ole Miss @ Auburn (6:00)
Vanderbilt @ Alabama (7:00)
Nevada @ New Mexico (11:15)

Minnesota's in the Top 25

NCAA College Basketball Polls, College Basketball Rankings, NCAA Basketball Polls - ESPN

Yes, I know Top 25 rankings don't matter in college basketball, but think about this: Lousy Minnesota is in the Top 25! That fact alone makes their season better than last year's 8-23 disaster, so congrats!

How can one be lousy and at the same time be considered a top 25 team? Yes Minnesota sucked last year, this year appears to be different.

Read the whole post, sir. I know that Minnesota is good this year, but you gotta admit: The fact they're in the Top 25 one season after going 8-23 is remarkable.

It is pretty remarkable, I honestly was hoping for a .500 season this year. Now it's looking like we may finish in the top 4 of the conference, but as other Gophers fan know, nothing is ever going to go according to plan, or come easy.

February 4th: Games outside of the Top 25

February 11th: Games outside of the Top 25

Reason #14 why I'm staying away from the CBB action until further notice: The Duke Blue Devils. 3 weeks ago, everyone thought they were done. Now with a win over North Carolina, Duke looks ready to be a national title contender.
For today, here are the games outside of places like Duke and Saint Mary's: (All times are Eastern)

Seton Hall @ St. John's (12:00)
Marquette @ Georgetown (12:00)
Richmond @ La Salle (2:00)
Arkansas State @ UT-Arlington (5:30)
Auburn @ Ole Miss (6:00)
Columbia @ Princeton (6:00)
Harvard @ Yale (7:00)
