Thanks Chip! Howie took the blame for that pick, but I think Chip made the call.

Marcus Smith was all Howie. He screwed up that 1st round because he miscalculated on the 6-7 players he targeted at 22 and had to scramble for plan B when they all went before.

Howie has mentioned several times since (indirectly) that he has made errors in the past about reaching on the board for a specific position, and that Joe Douglas brings a different approach to the table that he needed in his own player evaluations. Re: Marcus Smith, Danny Watkins, Jaiqwuan Jarrett.

I blame Chip for a lot of things, but he did draft Jordan Hicks, who I think is fantastic. He needs a running mate, and if somehow, someway Reuben Foster drops to 14, I don't even wait for the 5 minutes in between picks, I run that card up to the podium in 5 seconds.

Anyone catch highlights of John Ross' Pro Day? Just ridiculous cutting ability on his routes. If he stays healthy he will be a weapon for some team.

Imagine if he had a QB that could throw a deep ball that he didn't have to wait for...

You never see a guy rocket up the charts just before the draft and actually be worth it. Few drafts had McCaffrey in round 1, let alone #14. This is all smoke with no fire. He will go late first round at bet, I bet still round 2.

I'm not down on him. In fact I'd dance if we got him in round 2, but he won't anywhere near #14. The pick will be Cook, a WR, or a defensive stud that drops to us.

Most early rankings and mocks are "follow the leader" type fluff ... people follow internet mocks as if it were college scouts making these things. More often than not these people making early rankings haven't even watched many of these guys even play ... mostly copy/paste and change some things around to make it look like they have a clue. The only lists that matter is a couple of weeks away when guys in the know get some inside info on areas where players "could" go ... even then you'll get tons of early Rd picks of players you've never seen ranked high. Unless you're a trained pro scout with endless tape and time to watch it all ... it's just a guessing game. Hell, I watch 8-10 hrs of games every Saturday during the college season and it doesn't mean I'm qualified to properly rank what round these guys should be drafted.

Very true Rey. It is fun to muse, but a month from now is when things start to get serious. It's still free agent time in the NFL.

I agree - there are so many people out there nowadays that literally maybe watch a couple of hours a games, then think they are suddenly qualified to rank prospects and make mock drafts, which are a joke in itself. The only time I really pay attention to a mock draft is the week of the draft. Most pro evaluators already have their boards set, as we get closer to the draft that's when the real info starts to leak out. Combine and pro days may shift some teams boards a bit on a few players, but usually for guys who have mid to late round projections.

True, for instance, I think fans undervalue Tra'Davious White. It seems that the reporters covering the Eagles, think the Birds are high on White.

It would be funny if we end up with Tra' White as our first round pick. In my initial post for this past season's college thread he was one of the 4 guys I mentioned. 16-17 College/Draft Talk but I don't think he's worth the 14th pick in this draft.

The rankings are set in early February. All the professionals have already done their research. Any big changes you see later are put out by eager reporters or agents.

Right, but these rankings and mocks you see online are not done by professional scouts.

This...this...motherfucking THIS!

I would love to see McCaffrey in midnight green....just not at 14.

Turrant Davenport, USA Today, likes him a lot, even at #14, although his top choice is Davis.

Yeah - Davis, Ross, and Foster would be my picks, although I do like Conley, and Humpfrey on Kiper's list. He changes it everyday.

Look at that list, so many good players to grab after pick #20, trade down and add an extra 3rd

Interesting way to view things. You could also argue that the Eagles should pick at 14 and try to get back into the 1st round by packaging their 2nd round pick (#43) with other picks.

I wouldn't rule out the Eagles trading up a few spots in the 2nd to get a certain guy if he's still on the board. They've done that a few times in prior drafts.

And they have an extra 4th to do it with.
