MS has been working on this for years. They have a fair amount of criticism over their efforts. They have revised how far the projections will go out into the peripheral vision to the point where it's only going to be directly in the middle as of the latest news I saw on it. Most of the videos you have seen are impressions of what they believe they will reach. They aren't actual footage.

Check out the Magic Leap which DOES show actual footage of their augmented reality unit.

There are a couple of others in the market place working on units. I believe all but the Magic Leap are using Windows 10 for their OS so MS is going to make out on this market whether their units are the industry leader or not.

Someone is working on adding some of this tech to car windshields to put speed, nav, and other things that typically take your eyes off the road right in front of you. That is likely a long way out though.
