Hearing #Mariners believe they need another starting pitcher. If they don’t get Ohtani, they are likely to increase efforts to get starter through a trade or free agency.

Id be really concerned if they didnt think this, tbh even if they get Ohtani they should still target another #1-#3 starter

Mariners and Angels are doing whatever they can to offer Shohei Ohtani more money. Twins traded them each $1 million of international bonus space for a pair of 2017 draftees. Third-round outfielder Jacob Pearson and fifth-round catcher David Banuelos. Nice little value play.

David Banuelos, 21, was one of 3 finalists for Johnny Bench Award as nation's top college catcher. Former winners include Stuart Turner (2013) and Kurt Suzuki (2004). Threw out 60 pct of attempted base stealers for Dirtbags. #mntwins

The seems odd since the pay will be so low anyway. Unless they can pull off about 30 more trades like this.

I think there is a max so they can't even do that. I just hope we get him because we traded a couple good prospects for money we have no other use for. So Mariners.

    New MLB International Signing Rules

December 02, 2016 By Ben Badler

The new Collective Bargaining Agreement includes significant changes to the international signing rules.

There is no international draft, as Major League Baseball had initially proposed, but teams will now have bonus pools with hard caps. Gone are the days of teams being allowed to blow past their bonus pools, pay an overage tax and be limited to signings for no more than $300,000 the following two signing periods.

    Bonus Pools

Under the new system, beginning for the 2017-18 signing period that starts on July 2, most teams will have a bonus pool of $4.75 million. The clubs that receive a "Competitive Balance Pick" in Round A of the June draft get a $5.25 million bonus pool. The clubs that get a "Competitive Balance Pick" in Round B get a $5.75 million pool. So, essentially, some of the smaller market teams will get extra money in their pools. Signing bonuses of $10,000 or less will continue to be exempt from the bonus pools. Every team’s 2017-18 bonus pool is available here.

2017-18 bonus pool is available here.

Teams can also trade pool space once the signing period opens on July 2. They can acquire up to 75 percent of their original pool allocation in 2017-18 and 2018-19, then after that they can trade for up to 60 percent of their original pool. Teams are allowed to trade away as much of their pool as they want. So a team that starts with a $4.75 million pool could trade up to around $8.3 million, while a team with $5.75 million could trade up to get a little more than $10 million. One difference in the new CBA is that teams will now be allowed to trade for additional pool space even if they have already spent their full pool allotment. Under the previous system, a team’s bonus pool consisted of four individual slot values, and trading pool space required trading those slot values. The new system is just a straight bonus pool with no individual slot values, so that should make things simpler with regards to trades.

The size of a team's bonus pool could also shrink if the club signs a qualifying offer free agent. A team over the major league luxury tax that signs a qualifying offer player loses $1 million from its international pool the next signing period. All other clubs who sign a qualifying offer player will lose $500,000 from their pool the next signing period. All forfeited international bonus pool money will be distributed equally among the other clubs.

Is this sarcasm that went over my head? San Deigo is one of my favorite cities for sure... been to several ballgames there too, pretty nice stadium, feels a lot like Safeco with the environment surrounding the stadium pretty fun too. Its like Seattle with better weather lol. I don't have a clue about the Asian community there though. Plus the team is usually garbage like the Mariners, so who knows really.

Easily one of my favorite guys we picked up in the draft... We are selling out for this guy. If we don't get him then... well fuck

JD dropped the news that newly acquired left-hander Sam Moll will be stretched out to a starting role this spring after being claimed from the Pirates.

"He was a good starting pitcher in college," Dipoto said. "We view him minimally as a multi-inning bullpen addition, and we'll stretch him out as a starter and see if that's a possibility. Because physically, the combination of his fastball and changeup give him a chance to go through a lineup more than one time."

No, I was really serious. We can disagree on the city itself, but I'm speaking in terms of an athlete. San Diego is always near the bottom of destinations for any athlete to ever sign with whether it be Padres or the former Chargers. So I'm just curious as to what he sees that others don't.

I would think it is the organizations more than the city itself. SD is the best if you can afford it.

Yeah I don't know... As far as what could've been in their pitch that swayed him, I haven't really heard much specifically other than some speculation the Padres may be willing to give him time in the outfield so he gets AB's. Personally I think a situation where he is playing the field, pitching and pinch hitting back firing I just don't think it will work in the MLB. If he wants AB's I think DHing makes the most sense. I am starting to wonder if he prefers a National league team or American.

Also the fact that Dipoto has traded for more money to use on him feels like desperation. This entire thing feels like a circus.

Tyler Chatwood (Rockies) signed with Cubs for 3/$39. The first real signing of the off season and a guy I liked for M's.

I liked him for the M's too... Of that so called second tier of FA pitchers he was in my top 3 for a fit for the M's. I think a lot of what Dipoto is going to do is based on what happens with Ohtani, sadly it feels he is putting all his eggs in that basket.
