Morning Briefing: Happy Jay Bruce Day!

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets will unveil something new and something old on Tuesday. What they desperately need is a Subway Series win.

Jay Bruce and Jonathon Niese arrive on Tuesday after being acquired in separate trades at the non-waiver deadline.

They join a team that has lost five of its last six games and is now 7½ games behind the division-leading Washington Nationals and 2½ games behind the Miami Marlins for the second wild-card spot with 57 games remaining in the season.

Jacob deGrom (6-5, 2.56 ERA) opposes right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (7-3, 3.16) at 7:10 p.m. ET at Citi Field. The series then shifts to the Bronx for two more games.

It looks like there will be four new faces on Tuesday with the Mets. Utility player Ty Kelly and left-handed reliever Josh Edgin will join the club from Triple-A Las Vegas. Jay Bruce and Jon Niese also are expected to join the Mets after Monday's trades. There is a good possibility Asdrubal Cabrera (knee) and Justin Ruggiano (hamstring) land on the DL. It's not clear how the other two spots will be freed, but certainly Brandon Nimmo's playing time would be negligible in the majors, so it makes sense to return him to the Pacific Coast League to get at-bats.

The Mets have placed Asdrubal Cabrera (knee) and Justin Ruggiano (hamstring) on the DL and demoted Brandon Nimmo and Seth Lugo. Ty Kelly and Josh Edgin officially have been promoted along with the additions of Jay Bruce and Jon Niese

Jay Bruce recalled striking out against Jeurys Familia in Cincinnati last year to end the game when the Mets clinched a postseason berth. He called it the nastiest pitch he may ever have seen....
earlier...Bruce told Terry Collins he had played center field before, but he believes the plan is to primarily use him in right field.

The Mets plan to have Yoenis Cespedes serve as the designated hitter for five straight games, starting Wednesday in the Bronx for 2 games against the Yankees, and then in Detroit this weekend for 3 against the Tigers. The hope is that Cespedes will be able to return to the outfield for the 3 game Arizona series, beginning Aug 9 at Citi Field.

Juan Lagares underwent surgery Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan to repair a partially torn UCL in his left thumb. Dr. Andrew Weiland performed the procedure. Terry Collins has estimated a six-week recovery time, meaning the procedure is not season-ending.

Jose Reyes is at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday but is headed to Florida. He should be ready to return about when he is eligible to be activated from the disabled list on Aug. 13. Reyes has a left oblique strain.

Lucas Duda's season appears over. Sandy Alderson said Duda's back has flared up. He went to California to see Dr. Robert Watkins and has been prescribed 30 days of rest. "It doesn't look good" for playing this season, Alderson said. Alderson went on to say "Dr. Robert Watkins does not believe surgery will be required to address Lucas Duda's back despite the latest setback". Duda originally was diagnosed with the stress fracture in his lower back in May.

Terry Collins said he had no issue with Yoenis Cespedes playing golf after having missed three straight starts with a quadriceps injury that remains an issue. Collins intimated that Cespedes used a golf cart. Cespedes serves as the DH on Wednesday night.

Zack Wheeler's rehab assignment will begin on Saturday with Class A St. Lucie. Wheeler underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2015.

@Used 2 B Hu

I'm starting to think that whatever it is hitting coach kevin long is having the mets hitters do and telling these guys about their hitting approach....they should probably just start doing the complete opposite at this point.

The shit he's been preaching definitely ain't workin'.

I hope when TC gets shown the door, (hopefully soon)...he and dan warthen follow him out.

Morning Briefing: Or should it be Mourning Briefing?

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets received more jolts Wednesday.

After serving as the designated hitter in his return to the lineup, Yoenis Cespedes landed on the disabled list postgame with continued discomfort in his right quadriceps, which has tormented him for a month.

Cespedes had been golfing earlier in the day, although manager Terry Collins professed he had no issue with that activity.

Brandon Nimmo will rejoin the Mets in place of Cespedes for Thursday’s series finale against the New York Yankees in the Bronx.

The Mets must win that game merely to split the four-game Subway Series.

Bartolo Colon (9-6, 3.58 ERA) opposes right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (9-7, 4.78) at 7:05 p.m. ET.

The Mets (55-52) trail the first-place Washington Nationals by a season-high 8½ games. The Amazin’s trail the St. Louis Cardinals by two games for the second wild-card spot.
