When New York Mets starter Jacob deGrom and San Francisco Giantsstarter Madison Bumgarner match up at AT&T Park on Thursday night, it will be a matchup of pitchers with striking similarities. No, the two wouldn't be confused for each other if they walked down the street. But their 2016 seasons match up in a lot of ways.

The Mets are not wasting any more time. Yoenis Cespedes, Asdrubal Cabrera and Justin Ruggiano will all be in San Francisco on Thursday. Cespedes is not eligible to be activated until Friday

Neil Walker remains out of the lineup for a third straight game on Thursday due to lower-back stiffness. With no word yet from Pittsburgh about his wife going into labor, he still is active and with the ballclub in San Francisco.

Gabriel Ynoa has been demoted to Triple-A Las Vegas to make room for the activation of Justin Ruggiano. The Mets had been carrying an extra reliever. Yoenis Cespedes and Asdrubal Cabrera traveled to San Francisco on Thursday, but are not active.

Terry Collins said Justin Ruggiano will fill the Juan Lagares role -- meaning starting in center field against left-handed pitching. "That's why we got him, and that's what we're going to do," Collins said. Ruggiano returns from a hamstring strain on Thursday after rehabbing with Las Vegas.

Terry Collins said Asdrubal Cabrera and Yoenis Cespedes will be activated from the disabled list on Friday. "We're gradually getting the pieces back together -- getting the band back," Collins said.

SAN FRANCISCO -- And now the New York Mets are dealing with an injury to Steven Matz, too.

Matz has been scratched from Friday’s start against the San Francisco Giants because of shoulder discomfort, manager Terry Collins announced. The hope is that Matz will only miss one start.

Rookie Seth Lugo (0-1, 2.65 ERA) instead will make his first major league start opposite right-hander Johnny Cueto (13-3, 2.97) on Friday at 10:15 p.m. ET at AT&T Park.

Yeah, we're pretty much done for this year. Might make a small run here and there but too many teams to overcome and the maths don't look good for passing all of them. Injuries have been a total bitch this year.

Very frustrating...and even more so because the injury excuse just enables Sandy to basically keep giving TC and Warthen a pass on their ineptitude.

Neil Walker is taking a red-eye flight to Pittsburgh on Sunday night. The plan is for doctors to induce labor with his wife Niki on Monday night. Walker intends to be on paternity leave for the three-game series in St. Louis and rejoin the Mets on Friday in New York.

Jim Henderson is being activated from the disabled list and is en route to San Francisco from Las Vegas. Erik Goeddel has been demoted. Wally Backman told Terry Collins that Henderson's velocity has returned to the level it stood when the Mets broke camp out of Port St. Lucie. Henderson will handle the seventh inning. "Right now our bullpen can use a fresh arm," Collins said.

Tom Seaver was presented an NL championship ring at his vineyard on Friday in Calistoga, California by Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon as well as Jay Horwitz and Howie Rose
