Morning Briefing: Zack Wheeler Day arrives

DETROIT -- As difficult as it may be to believe, the New York Mets have gone a full month without winning back-to-back games.

And after Friday’s series-opening loss to the Detroit Tigers, the Mets find themselves nine games behind the Washington Nationals in the NL East.

As for the wild-card standings, the Mets (56-53) trail the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins by two games for the second spot.

The Mets try to pick up the pieces on Saturday. Logan Verrett (3-6, 4.20) opposes left-hander Matt Boyd (2-2, 4.71) at 7:10 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, in Port St. Lucie, Zack Wheeler will pitch in a game Saturday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery in March 2015. Wheeler is scheduled to log roughly two innings and 35 pitches for Class A St. Lucie against Bradenton at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Here's the Mets lineup for Saturday's 7:10 p.m. ET game against the Tigers at Comerica Park.
With a lack of righty hitters, Ty Kelly is in left field and Rene Rivera is the DH against the Detroit southpaw Matt Boyd.

Granderson, CF
Kelly, LF
Walker, 2B
Bruce, RF
Flores, 1B
D'Arnaud, C
Johnson, 3B
Rivera, DH
Reynolds, SS

Verrett, RHP

*The whole righty vs lefty thing is silly, overrated and it's ridiculous.
TC needs to steer away from that outdated conventional thinking.

I can't believe he's still allowed to stick around and mismanage this team. Has Sandy gone totally senile??? It's comical how inept Collins really is. He's been getting exposed for his many gaffes in just about every series since Memorial Day. Pretty sad to see...and even sadder at how complacent the FO chooses to be.

from yesterday:
After another loss to Tigers, Mets sinking closer to .500

Terry Collins said it remains unresolved who will start the next time Logan Verrett's turn arises, Friday against the Padres. Jon Niese, a call-up such as Gabriel Ynoa and Verrett are options

Morning Briefing: Can Jacob deGrom stop the slide?

DETROIT -- Sandy Alderson met with Terry Collins after Saturday's game, trying to come up with answers (and also, reportedly, scolding him for not challenging the final play).

Now, the Mets try to avoid getting swept when they send Jacob deGrom to the mound on Sunday for a 1:10 p.m. ET game at Comerica Park.

DeGrom (7-5, 2.41) opposes right-hander Anibal Sanchez (6-11, 6.26).

DeGrom has produced a scoreless outing in three of his last four starts. He has a 1.54 ERA in seven starts since June 25.

The Mets (56-54) remained nine games behind the Washington Nationalsin the division. They are two games out of a wild-card spot.
