I saw that, and I'm fucking sick of the 3 stars, especially on the oline, where we are deep with (young) talent. We need talent, we have depth with our young team.

STOP WITH THE 3 STAR PLAYERS. We got enough. Go after the big fish. This isn't going to be a Big class. Also how many OL we are taking the last 2 years. Im all for the Oline but lets go after Dline or MLBs. That is were we are thin.

Offers he had were Kentucky, Purdue, Nebraska, Cal, and Northwestern.

I think I have to go with the crowd here. This kid might be great, and I hope he is, but it seems a little early to be offering a bunch of 3 star players with mediocre offer lists. I can see doing this at the end of the year if we have a couple of needs that haven't been met, but this seems a little early for these offers. I hope this guy proves me wrong.

Honestly you can't get caught up in the star ratings, some of Alabama's best O-Lineman on the team that beat Notre Dame weren't 4 or 5 star guys. Also it's pretty early in the process so his star rating could change. They have two really good O-Lineman already in this class so I'm not expecting too many more. Probably 4 at the most. Right now this class has 2 three stars according to espn and 5 4 stars. They are also in on plenty of talent being so early I try not to get too worked up over things.

:agree: This. OL "star" rankings are by and large based on measurables, height/weight, arm length. You don't fit a certain preconceived "mold" of a player, your ranking tends to suffer, despite technique, despite the mental acumen and despite the attitude. He's probably a little too short at 6'4" and slightly underweight at 270, although those are great numbers for a HS player who hasn't even started his senior season. Looking at his tape though, he's got execellent form, and he finishes his blocks routinely. He played through the whistle (sometimes and then some) on virtually every play. You need nasty on your OL, it looks like this kid has it. We've recruited 5* puppy dogs before (Sam Young I am looking at you). I'll take a 3* who after he pancakes you, goes after your family in the stands over that any day.

Also I can't stress enough that you want players that really want to play at Notre Dame not flip floppers like Lynch and Vanderdoes. Overall this isn't a bad class, sure some schools already have way more players committed but in recent years those teams have been better than Notre Dame so it isn't surprising. What needs to start happening is the coaching staff needs to do a better job coaching up some of the talent they already have.

Speaking of Aaron Lynch, I couldn't help but notice how he was rated the 18th best DE and the 207th best player in the draft. You can't help but think his move to USF really cost him a lot of money. He sure looked like he had more talent when he came to Notre Dame. I just wonder how he dropped so far down, wonder what his main weakness or issues are.

Well he seemed like a pretty selfish player when he was at Notre Dame getting flagged about as much as he made great plays.

I agree, he stays at ND I bet he is a 1st rd pick. He will regret that decision for the rest of his life. I know his mom is still pissed about that.

Clowney 5 star top player in ESPN150, Khalil Mack wasn't even rated, Watkins low 4 star ESPN150, Robinson low 4 star, Matthews a low 4 star ESPN150, Manziel and Evans were both 3 high star recruits, Lewan low 4 star ESPN 150, Aaron Donald low 4 star, Bortles 3 solid star, Mosley low 4 star and Clinton-Dix a solid 4 star ESPN150, Ebron a low 4 star, Dennard a 2 star, Moses solid 4 star, Beckham high 3 star, Martin Tuitt and Nix were all low 4 stars but in the ESPN 150, Justin Gilbert high 3 star, Calvin Pryor high 3 star and Bridgewater low 4 star ESPN150, Cooks high 3 Star, Fuller high 3 star, Shazier low 4 star ESPN150, Hageman high 3 star, Jernigan solid 4 star ESPN150, Verrett not rated, Lee low 4 star ESPN150, Ealy high 3 star, Barr low 4 star ESPN150, Latimer 2 star.

That is ESPN's top 32 players in the 2014 NFL Draft only one was a 5 star, 17 4 star players most of them lower rated between 79-82, and 14 players rated as 3 stars or lower. So don't get caught up on the star ratings.

Great post. It's fun to look at them three or four years later. We've had our share of three stars shine pretty brightly too. Niklas was a three right?

I think he was a 4 star, but he came in as an O-line player. I've seen a lot of players move from TE to O-line, but it's rare to see someone go from O-line to TE.

According to ESPN Niklas was a high 3 star TE, but I did see other sites list him as an O-Lineman at least at the time I recall that.

Has anybody actually watched this kid's film besides jjc? He is freaking NASTY...just smashing dudes, pancakes left and right. And he goes to the very, very last echo of the whistle. Sticks and finishes his blocks extremely well.

Nice job Harry!!! Get Tillery to stick and were done on the O-line this year.

Recruit ranking is a big business these days, so I do put stock into them. It's not a perfect science but I think if you looked at the overall average 5 stars perform better and contribute sooner than 4 stars and so on, so I tend to side with averages.

Most of the top prospects in this years NFL draft were low 4 stars or high 3 star players so the ratings aren't the end all be all. Sure you are more likely to be successful with a bunch of highly rated guys but some of Alabama's best lineman haven't been the 5 star guys.
