All the attention was on the QB battle but still you would think there would be something about the progress or lack thereof of the defense. Anybody heard anything good, bad or otherwise about how the defense is doing in practice.

I was saying today how I was never really worried about our offense regardless of who the qb was. I really want to hear about the defense. So far, not much.

There hasn't been much about the unit as a whole on the Oklahoman website, just some snippets about individual players and not much on them at that.

Maybe they want it that way.

I don't know, it could mean the defense has a long way to go before it is worth anything...

Well they get a few games to shake the bugs out before their first big test. I just hope they have the personnel to make something with. Oklahoma has been known for killer defenses for so long, and the talent just hasn't been there for a few years. I knew Tom Wort couldn't handle things from the start. The biggest issue for me is linebackers and finding a front 4 that can get some pressure on a qb.

Might as well. We can't field 4 d-lineman who can consistently gets pressure on opposing offenses. I did read an espn article that mentioned the defense would focus on packages that keep the opponent guessing. So they don't know who's coming. A 3-4 set would be good for that.

Truth is Stoops has only had one defense that approached those of Switzer's. And it did win the NC in 2000, OU hasn't had a really killer defense since the Boz left..

I think the 2008 defense was pretty darn good, but still lacked some talent the caliber of calmus and Williams. We need a guy like Tommy Harris in a bad way.

Just a positive thought and perspective. The defense has young players and new faces that just didn't get to Oklahoma as walk ons. They were highly recruited and evaluated to play for championships. Yes we all know a blown gasket has occurred on D but this group is a different team. As a Sooner fan for the last 50 years plus there has been ups and downs with a whole lot more ups. Just saying and maybe I'm 100 per cent wrong but its possible this years group will play with a mission.

:agree:

that's what it takes.
saw that in 2000
saw that in 1985

those defense's came out of nowhere.
not great to begin their seasons, but developed and got better with every single game they played.

I knew Tom Wort couldn't handle things from the start.

I will beg to differ, Sir...in theory.

Tom Wort was a badass LB caught up in the wrong system.

We all saw how many big plays he's made. He will never have the skill set to cover WR's effectively (small, not considered fast). He was a between the tackles/attacking LB and excelled in those sets and situations.

His role changed from a starter to a situational LB, because that's what the BIG XII predicates. Dude would have been a standout in the BLOB 10.

Don't think he will make it in the NFL though.
